Want to start something healthy and ongoing, a habit. I want to start running, I live in SF and the weather is always gloomy, this year it has been raining. I always decide to run and have no interest or motivation to do so. I have sprinted in the past as part of Barry’s bootcamps or HIIT bootcamps, in general I don’t like running. I am thinking of a gym membership and running on tread boring but achievable with weather issues. Any suggestions from runners (who didn’t love running before) how did you start? And any tips on what did you do to develop this habit?
I suggest going on long walks with friends. Running is over rated, and both stimulating conversations and long walks do a lot for health (and burn calories if that’s what you’re looking for).
Although walks aren't a bad idea, they are fundamentally different from running in terms of the exercise benefit. That's not to say that running is the right way, but walking is definitely not the same and will not get you to a point where you're doing vigorous exercise on a daily basis, like running.
Just run, baby
I don't know if this option is available in SF but trail running is what did it for me. Hated running, especially on a treadmill but I loved hiking. Trail running was the perfect mix and it was way better on my knees then the road.
If you mean just running on trails, there are so many trails near me, in golden gate and presidio park; some of them are breathtakingly beautiful! Do you run in the rain too? Its muddy and pretty uneven in general.
I run in the rain as well. A nice pair of trail running shoes which are kind of a combo between running shoes and hiking shoes certainly helps. For me the uneven terrain has helped strengthen my ankles, knees, etc. Just take it slow at first but its much prettier running then staring at a screen or building.
Buy (or use) a treadmill and use something like iFit. I’ve spent decades trying to force myself to run and never not hated it. I even got out to running reasonable distances but it was essentially torture. Having the low friction of a treadmill plus guided, structured programs with someone “coaching” me and also ensuring I ramp gradually helped. The big thing I learned is that I had been running at too high am exertion level. Most of your time (80%) should be spent at 75-77% max heart rate and like a 4 on rate of perceived exertion with occasional speed/strength/progressive days. I realized I had always run at like 85-90% whcih meant my body never adapted and I was utterly miserable the whole time. I kinda enjoy running now. I wouldn’t call myself a “runner” but 4-5 miles is no big deal whereas if I did that distance before I’d want to die at the end (Someone literally asked me if I needed medical assistance when they saw me one time) The different locales and having someone talking to me help a lot too. YMMV
I was thinking of getting peloton tread, but have kids at home and it is hard to control them to not get on it! Any suggestions on treadmill or programs? Yes Barry’s is the worst they probably make someone runs at 90%+ and I have wondered if its safe!
I bought a Landice because of the reliability and a lifetime warranty. It’s essentially a light commercial treadmill. But it doesn’t have a built in screen/etc. peloton is obviously very popular but I actually wanted less tech as that ages very quickly whereas a good treadmill can last decades. I just mounted a tv on the wall in front of it instead and run iFit which ive really enjoyed using, more than say Peloton classes because they film in locations so it feels like traveling to different places. The subscription cost is very much worth it and I just stream my phone to the tv. I have to manually adjust speed but to me that’s no big deal. Peloton is obviously popular but I’m always dubious of new comers to producing mechanical stuff in terms of the likely longevity/reliability. Nordic Track is well rated but I’ve read a lot of horror stories about their reliability and customer service (Check Reddit). Often you can find lightly used commercial treadmills on Craigslist but I waited a bit and never saw anything that appealed. True and Precor also tend to be good brands but best advice is to go to a store and try them as they do feel different and it’s not a small purchase
Start with a run 5 minutes, walk 5 minutes, or run a block, walk a block. Increase the time or distance. At the end of the day it is just one foot in front of the other.
Google "couch to 5k"
Sign up for a 5k fun run with friends. Then you can aim to train for it, but it’s not so bad to walk the whole thing either.
I have like 40 mins- 1 hr to spare in my day for workout, co-ordinating with others is impossible; have 2 kids and my social life revolves around going to bday parties, play dates and organized around them!
You just have to coordinate once, which is to sign up for the 5K, and then meet them there. You train separately - training together is unnecessary because it’s a “fun run.” Otherwise sign up with your family and aim to jog / walk it together. 5k’s are great for family - my friend does it with her 3 kids all the time. If you did a Halloween one, you could all dress up, as an example.
Run outside. It’s more fun Use Strava or RunKeeper and follow a training plan. Identify 1-5 mile loops beginning and ending where you live that have nice scenery.
I feel awkward to run alone outside, I have tried in the past and then just walked 😂 this could just be me problem!
No one cares what you are doing! Put in the AirPods on transparency mode, blast some trance or drum and bass, and pound the miles away. Once you are in shape it’ll feel amazing.
I am not a real runner, but I like to do Disney races. Disney does such a bang up job with their routes filled with music and characters cheering you on that the 10k flies by.
