How to make new friends?

Recently moved to bay area. Tried to reconnect with old classmates, but no more contact after dinner or coffee. Met a lot of new people at my company or social events like Meetup, but unable to make deep and lasting connection. Does anyone have similar experience and how do you get over it?

It’s normal unfortunately. Usually I get to meet other parents through my daughter’s school, and end up hanging out with some of them. But few of them have same interests, intellectual needs, and political beliefs. It’s weird. Trying to meet people after 30yo is a nightmare.

Need to nail one connection with someone who is well connected in terms of peers. Then offer to host something, and actually do it, for that ring of people to show you have something to offer in return. Then you should be set.

I met some people at Meetups that later became some of my closest friends. I think there's a higher chance of that happening if you attend a Meetup with a group that schedules them consistently (at least once a month) and ideally about a cause or hobby you're passionate about. I no longer work at Meetup; I have no ulterior motive for posting this.

What kind of meetups?

Meetup QTjl21 Jun 8, 2019

One for volunteering and several for coding. NYC Python is really active and some other groups meet every weekend to code. I signed up for some running and illustration Meetups but haven't had a chance to go yet. Even if you're not into coding in your free time, there might be a group aligned with your interests that meets regularly.

Yup that’s how it is and you just deal with it anyway.

Similar situation ... Waiting for any one old friend to move here ... If not will return to my home country ...

Why? Which country?

India. Just got so busy working and traveling with wife, didn't spend time to build social network, unfortunately no school or college friend came to bay area, and recently wlb at Google is gone. Miss old life when I use to be the most funny guy who ever one want to hangout with. Now so busy trying to meet high bar of Google.
