As a recently joined manager, quite interesting to observe that people are so focused on PSC and growth a LOT. This kid with around 4-5 years of total experience in Meta (& hasn’t worked before that) comes up to me (their manager) and says - “ I know that I am a well respected rockstar in the org since I got many back to back GE (Greatly exceeds ratings). I want to make sure we have an opportunity for me to try our management track and see if that’s interesting. If I continue my current trajectory, I do want to target to grow into a M2 in couple of years of time. Who are the other managers I can support a year down the line? How do I set myself for growth and success as M1 and then on path for M2 “ #engineering #engineering #swe
Oh god. Whatever you do don’t traumatize some poor junior with that sweaty IC as a manager
People who manage for their own career growth are almost always toxic
Probably doxxing yourself with the person if he’s on here, it’s fairly specific. It’s not a bad question but as you said, certainly is, uh, self confident. Bind is full of this kinda thing. But many of us are like that at that age and Meta plays into this with relatively fast promo trajectories.
I believe fast promo until IC5, then it’s another story (the case of every company). A manager is not about if you can code faster than your peers, but how do you manage conflicted situations across different stakeholders. Soft skills become more important than they use to be in your initial career trajectory
Yeah, of course. But irrespective there are cases of people moving from IC5/6 to a even a director (or VP) in handful of years. Projecting this for M2 would be a significant outlier but isn’t unheard of/impossible like at most companies. It’s unlikely he’ll pull it off as a lot of things have to line up there but it’s not crazy just it seems to have been stated in a very self confident way.
I don’t see anything wrong with this. I would be more than happy to assist someone who has a self belief like this. Whether they succeed or not is secondary - half the battle is won when you think you can win.
Once he’d realize that the skills needed to become M1 have nothing to do with what made him a rockstar, then he’d become more humble
I like his/her/their confidence.
This is a very Meta thing. Also you are expected(at meta) to help him with a specific plan.
I don’t see anything wrong with the engineer’s ask. They are ambitious and nothing’s wrong about it.
"I know I am a Rockstar" 🤮
Did they not get greatly exceeding as rating? Don’t see anything wrong with the person being transparent.
I think that even if you're doing incredibly well, humility is an important trait, and referring to yourself definitively as a Rockstar is absolutely cringe.
I had a similar experience at my work. What I suggested the employee was to focus on a stable growth meaning, focusing on the right cards and improving their skills accordingly over a period of time. As others here said, there are so many unknown factors here to put a timeline to it. But you should be very proud of this person and embrace him and nurture him to see what’s there for him in the coming future. Just don’t promise on timeline because it’s not in your hands but promise on the commitment that you can provide to him with more 1-1s in grooming this kid and setting up for success. You will be amazed to see where they will end up.
He might get it … and you and I will clap for him. ☺️
