I do not tip. I pay what is on the bill. Common complaints (likely to see in this thread). Complaint: Servers don’t make a standard wage False. 1. Servers are guaranteed at least minimum wage in Washington state. 2. Market and the value you bring to the company determines your pay. I wouldn’t say software engineering is more difficult than any other engineering profession but the value I provide to my company is much greater than say a MechE with similar YoE at Boeing. Complaint: Servers will spit in your food. False. 1. Highly illegal. 2. I eat out maybe once a month and it’s a different person serving by the time I repeat a restaurant visit (high turnover). 3. If they did spit and I don’t notice does it even matter at that point. Complaint: If you can’t tip then you can’t afford to eat out. False. 1 Statistically I’m in the top 1-2% of earners in the restaurant. So if I can’t afford to eat there then the other 98% of customers can’t as well. 2 I pay the bill in full. If they wanted more money then increase the menu prices. There is no law saying I have to pay more than the billed amount. TC 470k
ok.
Didn’t even read. I just went straight to voting
you realize people who tip don't do it because they enjoy tipping or think it's a great, fair, or effective system, right? You realize some of us don't view service workers as subhuman? why don't you try supporting yourself by working at a restaurant for a year without access to your savings and then get back to us on how you feel about tipping.
I worked as a store clerk at Target for two years. Absolutely hated the job. You know what I did? I quit. I left that profession, went to school using the Pell Grant + scholarships + TA/RA, and found a job that compensates for the lifestyle I want. And you don’t need to become a programmer or “learn to code”. Tech writers, UX, product, sales, recruiters, etc do quite well.
and where were you living while you worked at target? 🙂
TC 470 and OP is can’t afford to tip. Something is wrong here.
Not part of our contract to hand out charities.
Tipping is stupid but why punish low income earners by not tipping? Don’t hoard your wealth because the best way to improve the economy is spending money on the local market.
At the end the day, it’s a personal choice. I don’t feel forced to tip my waiter, but I do it to help a fella out who’s hustling to make ends meet by doing that job.
Do you tip everyone you come in contact with for the same reason? I don't know anyone who works for fun. Pretty sure everyone does it to make ends meet.
Not everyone. Usually those who provide a personal service (e.g. waiter, barber) or those who I can tell can use some extra cash. Also “making ends meet” means you’re barely making enough to not get into debt. Pretty sure not everyone works to accomplish that. Some want bigger houses, etc.
tipping culture is absolute nonsense which only americans do
This ^
Yes, but it is still our culture and expected when you are eating out to tip 20% if op can't afford that on 470k a year he shouldn't eat out.
You must be fun at parties
But why do you feel like making excuses here?..
You have 470K TC and you’re here crying in the blind for 18% tip??? WTF dude, you seriously have an issue. Please I beg of you not to go out to eat and rather do take home and enjoy eating alone.
Yet, the company you work for that pays you has a tip feature for certain deliveries because it knows that it’s not economical for those that get you those deliveries to your door
Interesting you mention this. I recently bought some baby diapers and the only option for some reason was Amazon Fresh. I did not tip nor meet the delivery person and everything arrived as planned. Do you tip the mailman?
Mailman isn’t the same as the grocery delivery service. Mailman is subsidized by the US government which runs a postal service that is non-profit. You don’t seem to have a clue of what you’re blabbering here. Usually the dumbest are the most opinionated. Good night.
