I don’t understand the obsession about WLB

Sep 25, 2019 80 Comments

Getting sick of WLB complaints man. Y’all are getting paid considerably higher (3x or more) than the national median income and yet complain about working 80+ hours a week. You chose to be in this career and have the option to quit if you don’t like it. Either choose high TC or go work for a non-profit/teach at a school for a healthy lifestyle with good WLB. You are entitled if you think you deserve both.

You can’t have your cake and eat it too.

What’s your issue though? You get paid so much and don’t want to work?

If you did these things for free it would be called a hobby. By the very definition of “work,” we only do it because we are paid.

By nature, it’s not something we want to do, so to answer your question, nobody wants to work.

More money, less work. That’s the goal.

LOL!!! We aren’t hourly employees and at the risk of sounding like an absolute dick - people in the median income range do not possess the same skill set as us. Our TC is based on the understanding we work 40 hrs/week, except that isn’t a think in tech we do work way more. Complaining about the unjustness of that isn’t entitlement. Entitlement would be stuff like claiming we should be able to work fewer than 40hrs or claiming we have a right to free food and stuff.

40 hrs is an arbitrary line. You are entitled to be drawing that line in the first place.

40 hrs is not an arbitrary line... it’s a line for the US work week.. just because we are salary doesn’t mean that doesn’t apply to us, it just means if we work more we don’t get paid overtime and so our average hourly wage goes down. No clue why you think this is arbitrary and that we made it up ourselves...

Sheryl walked that shit back pretty fast after her husband died and wasn’t taking care of the kids for her anymore. She sings a very different tune these days.

also ‘bad apple’ doesn’t rake up the same intensity as ‘stinky fish’ ir ‘dirty fish’ or ‘diseased fish’. Comparing such douchebags to filthy animals is more satisfying than comparing them to inanimate food.

how does a dumbo like you get in apple... the impact and money software engineers make for the company justify the high pay.. more hours decrease productivity as a rested mind can work at higher level

    Work is an optimization problem
Minimize time spent and work done
    Maximize TC
If you think otherwise go start your own fucking company.

OP, something is terribly wrong in your hypothesis. I hope you really don’t mean it or did not think through while putting up, otherwise I wish no one get manager with your mindset.
Every job is different and being done in different environment with different set of skills.

You can not compare other jobs. There are many things to say that is wrong in it. This job dissipate lot of your energy and you are tied to it beyond 9-5 job window. So expecting a balance in restitution to what efforts people put out of the way, WLB is a need!
