IBM vs Salesforce
I wonder how they are different in terms of reputation and career. It seems that both are quite chill, and they both are in B2B. I'm mainly interested in the research positions, but I wonder why the overall scores for these companies differ significantly (Salesforce is around 4.2 star and IBM is someqhat above 3 here at Blind). Does anyone know why? Also, if anyone has an opinion about Salesforce Research vs IBM Research, please share! #research
Salesforce for sure. IBM tc is crap. They acquired and dismantled our startup. Culture is terrible. You can learn some cool stuff at IBM but it's not worth the low pay. If you have a choice don't choose IBM. I was a tech lead in Watson.

Is it still the case without Richard Socher? Also how about outside the moonshot team?
Not a fair comparison.. they are both in different leagues. For the same reasons you wouldn't compare Google with IBM.. you can't compare these too.
Why not? They are known for laid back culture in general. IBM Research is still a leading industry research lab in AI. I hear Salesforce Research occasionally, but I didn't come across many papers from them. It's of course because of their short history and maybe small size. They both publish papers about AI, in particular natural language processing. Conferences including ACL, EMNLP, etc.
Not certain of the relevance of the IBM vs Salesforce comparison as SFDC barrels headlong towards becoming the next IBM...🤷♂️ The party’s over, the lights are on, & SFDC is already displaying signs of becoming our grandparents corporate monolith. Just one example: my hiring manager was promoted 4 times over a 5 year period, and I’m being told to now expect 3-5yrs between promotions.
IBM Research is like a separate org from IBM in general. IBM Research is still reputable on some fields. You should consider Microsoft research, Google, and fb research.
Thank you for your insight. I actually like most of things here at IBM Research, except TC. My friend at MSR told me they are practically on hiring freeze. I'm trying others too and there was a lead from Salesforce, so wondered how they are doing. What do you think of Amazon Alexa? Too much applied?
Alexa is fine, it's more about culture fit. Personally I'd go for Google Research, Fb Research (+ building 8), Microsoft Research, and IBM Research, in that order. I'm not too familiar with Salesforce Research but think it ranks below the research facilities I mentioned above.
