- suddenly all your slack messages and emails you had to respond to no longer matter (if your access gets cut off right away) - never have to worry about the tech debt of that shitty app or monolith or distributed system anymore - can travel while getting paid out the bonus and severance - reset your life, move, etc. and start a new chapter My heart does go out to those on visa though who have to find employment within a matter of days. But otherwise, just offering a different viewpoint to those anxious about 2023. 140 MCOL
For some folks, yep, I can imagine it's a great deal. For others, this may equate to delaying retirement (or permanently switching to a lower stress career) by two years. And burning through all that cash can be scary even if you don't mind the time off! People earlier in their career are also hit a lot harder by time out of the workforce, you build most of your hard skills and see the most income growth in your 20s and early 30s.
“If you’re rich you don’t care about your job.”
Breaking news, right? Lol
Layoffs with severance are pretty sweet. Been laid off twice in my career with 3 months severance, had another job in 1. Cushy double pay. Of course it's a question of if you can find another role that isn't a paycut...
My job isn’t even hard. But it would be really nice to not be mentally confined to “I gotta produce” for a few months. I’m sure the grass is always greener but I’ve always dreamt of that. I wonder if the fact that you’re producing nothing would make some people go mad though
