Indians working in Amazon US outsourcing work to India 10$/hour

MiQ iDnI04 OP Jul 29, 2023

Recently got few calls where someone from India connected me to Indian employee working in Amazon USA and he asked me if I can do his work for 10$/hour. I am almost sure it is illegal on asking he/she told that it is quite common and most of Indian folks outsource their work at 10$/hour to India , so they deliver more , get better hike/promotions ,saved from PIP. Got calls for 3 profiles 1- JAVA , AWS work (looks SDE backend) 2- JAVA, AWS , Scala writing QA tests (looks SDE testing) 3- writing design docs related to arch (looks like some senior folk) They told he will share his screen over remote call , I have to connect from personal laptop and do the work Majorily they will contact Amazon employees in India Asking community if they have experienced the same.

This is common and fu*k those who do that. You know why Indians suffer from huge GC backlog? This is the one of the main reasons. Eligible people don’t enjoy the benefits But these blood suckers do.

MiQ iDnI04 OP Jul 29, 2023

Correct, imagine the pain of another hardworking employee obviously he cannot match the work of 2 people. I haven't said no, thinking of taking a screenshot and then reporting it to Amazon so that such cheaters are shown their true place

Dafaq..Hearing this for the first time

Its not that common but one of my colleagues used to work for a lady working in Nike USA. It was around 2018-19 , she used to pay him around 40-50 thousand and he has to do all the work , creating JIRA tickets , moving tickets , giving story points basically everything. At last he quit because he has to work in US hours at night so 2 jobs were taking toll on his health but he told she very easily got another Indian to do his work. But never expected that this will reach the scale of FAANG. Hence asking how common is this.

It’s a lot more common than you think. I have sat in too many on-site interviews where the person in front of me was clearly not the person during the phone screen, and I’d bet my house that neither of them would be the person actually doing the work if hired.

Do your companies not have authentication and authorization security controls to prevent people from doing this?

Amazon EeroPlane Jul 29, 2023

Amazon has *lots* so I don't know how these folks are orchestrating it. That, plus internal tooling and platforms are impossible without ubikey (sp?) every 24hrs

Amazon crXC72 Jul 29, 2023

I have seen people sharing req. spec. for the task and people in India push the code in private git repo from where the person in US copy and paste to company repo.. but it was for different company and it is shocking to me that it is happening to amazon where we have multiple auth but the way they do it’s not impossible.

How tf is this even possible

Amazon 6Pgr Jul 29, 2023

It is. Illegal of course but happened decade ago. Look up the Verizon guy who did this and trade stocks instead at his day job.

BNY Mellon SRAK72 Jul 29, 2023

This is common among desi consultancies

MiQ iDnI04 OP Jul 29, 2023

It's not like some consultancy outsourcing, the employee is outsourcing his own work at a peanuts price to cheap labour countries and getting paid in US $ for the same work done by someone else

Cisco icebot Jul 29, 2023

Pretty sure that's illegal

Microsoft atwJ06 Jul 29, 2023

Yes. 10$ per hour is a good amount in India. Great strategy from Amazon to save costs

MiQ iDnI04 OP Jul 29, 2023

I think you missed the point , its not Amazon but Amazon employees outsourcing its own work

Microsoft atwJ06 Jul 29, 2023

I see. So many Indians in US does this Not specific to only Amazon. These people work at two/three companies and to balance life they outsource the work someone in India. There are some Indian consultancies which provide the job support service

Microsoft tcwizard Jul 29, 2023

Amazon itself should be doing this to save costs

Amazon immutable- Jul 29, 2023

They are just with better pay

Intel not it Jul 29, 2023

I don't know if it is illegal but it certainly violates several confidentiality and security rules and is almost certainly grounds for firing.

Huntress AdkV51 Jul 29, 2023

Pretty sure it's fraud, hence illegal.

Amazon SlrpDGurk Jul 29, 2023

How could you do this at all when permissions are needed to work on either amazon or their customer systems? Makes sense for freelancers or small code piece work however you could get it for free w an llm why bother involving a person for a cost? Post is a lie

Amazon SlrpDGurk Jul 29, 2023

Do you understand how much more complex it is than that? SMH. Jesus what are you a PM? You’ve gotta be a PM, or a kid.
