So some 3 years ago I interviewed at Tableau. Seemed like a chill environment and so were the employees. Glad that I got rejected though, cause as a result I’m at Roblox now, but that’s not why I am making this post. I was bored last night and decided to look up my interviewers to see if they were still at Tableau… cause you know of all the acquisition by Salesforce, etc. To my surprise, all of them but one were still at Tableau and all of them were promoted. During the time of interview they were all seniors. Now they are all leads/architects. Do promotions happen that easily at Tableau? Do employees get raises as a result as well? Update: they were all promoted, but not just once, but twice.
You seem salty at a missed opportunity. There were title corrections to align with Salesforce ones.

Senior Software Engineers at Tableau were being paid at a higher band than SMTS’ at Salesforce. On acquisition, to keep the same pay, they came in as LMTS’. I however would find it difficult to believe that they went from SSE to Architect as they’d have to be a PMTS first.
Is Architect a formal title at Tableau?

I agree with you OP, I had a weird vibe interviewing at Tableau recently. Like it was one of those chicken farm cults where everybody's dressed in white and they're all overly too nice and I just couldn't click with any of them, well maybe for one but I did really poorly that round on the technical front and it was definitely all my fault.

Some of this was the result of title adjustment during the acquisition, as previously mentioned. But yes, I see definite title inflation here. And, sadly, those promotions didn't necessarily result in big pay boosts.
One releveling to map to Salesforce levels and one promotion in 3 years. Doesn't sound unusual
Titles don’t mean much, in some companies there are more levels than others, so you can get “promoted” faster. What you really should be looking at is the mapping of these levels against other major tech companies.
@Roblox - these were likely not promotions. When salesforce acquired tableau, there were two things that happened and saleforce made some real mistakes during this. First all titles got bulk mapped to what they thought were salesforce equivalents - but many of these were actually demotions not promotions so… Many SE became Senior Engineer Senior Engineer became Lead Member Technical Staff Staff became Principal Member Technical Staff Principal became architect The problem is that many Staff were performing and paid above equivalent to Architect and many Principal were performing and paid above Principal Architect. So then they made a series of ‘quiet’ relevels over a year literally half of the principals / architects became principal architect - no apology or official acknowledgement of an oops. There were a lot more staff but relevels and promotions also happened quietly to attempt to sort of fix it. It was much worse for managers… So no they probably didn’t get promoted, salesforce just has a much more clear leveling system than tableau had
Why was this even done? Why not just let things remain the same? Microsoft didn’t do this LinkedIn when acquiring it. So did the same thing happen to Slack?
Salesforce is a huge corporation and they have standardized titles. I worked at Microsoft - the linked in acquisition was ‘special’ so it was treated separately. I assume it happened at slack as well… but I left before it happened. I got my ‘relevel’ announcement about 2 hours after I gave my notice. Folks are right though about TCO and wlb, pre acquisition TCO would be really high because the stock price almost tripled (today) and folks that didn’t spend that but rather saved it as long term savings are doing well - which is how I personally was able to leave… the wlb also was just fine but you had to have an open mind, the salesforce priorities were not tableau priorities so a bunch of people experienced culture shock at that and had to let go of pet projects or reset expectations which can be hard. My choice to leave was simply that they screwed so many people by wrong leveling and didn’t acknowledge it - and I realized I didn’t need to be there anyway so I just left and am semi retired now (and walked away from some real $$$) - but I could have made it work if I had wanted or went somewhere else.

All of them had 2 promotions within the last 3 years. Let me update the post
