Internal Microsoft Offer vs Final Round Google

Looking for advice! Currently have an internal offer from Microsoft to move into a different PM role with a level bump and pay increase of about 8%. However, I was previously contacted by Google and skipped straight to an on-site based on the hiring manager reviewing my resume along with my strong internal references there. They reached out this week told me the on-site feedback is “looking really good” and I have a “Final?” Phone call today with the Hiring Manager to “Discuss the role” aka make sure I’m not a tool. Don’t want to accept internal, then external, and burn my bridge to ever return if needed which it seems like I would. But also, I want out of my role and gambling is somewhat risky since either would be an improvement. Is it risky to mention my Microsoft offer to Google? Initially I told them no timeline and no other offers because I had none, it came in from a previous interview cycle. Don’t want to come off as playing the field and getting denied from Google if I decline the internal move. Anyone have any insight on what to say / do? TC: 180k ish

Oh and for reference. The internal offer is a 62 and the Google my senior friends said would likely be an L5. I have zero insight to what an L5 PM type role at google in Mountain View makes. So happy to hear if anyone knows.

It’s very rare to hire L62 as L5. You should confirm with recruiter. Also, tell them you have offer can make process faster and higher comp. No harm for you.

I joined MS at a way low level by not knowing the system. 10 YOE. Have offers to move into 62 and 64 roles but only considering the 62 based on the team. Are they going to make me confirm my level somehow? They’ve not asked anything about it they know my experience. And no harm? Alright I’ll let them know! Should I tell the hiring manager on the call or the recruiter after the call ?

Why don't you be honest and tell your internal hm that you are interviewing in other places too and need a little time to decide. If I were in your place I would try my best to get the Google offer ASAP.

This was the only external I did as I wasn’t looking to leave but got approached to work on basically my dream team at Google so took the chance and ended up getting to this stage. If I tell the hiring manager or recruiter to try to expedite things I worry it’ll make me come across as playing the options for more money etc and get a deny

You are overthinking. As a rule of thumb, you should be the one innthe driver's seat when it comes to your choices. If they want you trust me they will make it happen.

If it's anything like the SWE interview experience, you are still at leasy a month away from a formal offer at Google. Hiring committee and more committees after before you get your contract.

Microsoft pmsquared OP Nov 8, 2018

Yeah I figured 2-4 weeks based on what my senior friends said over there who did this similar role process recently

Google Uvor31 Nov 8, 2018

Google l5 >>> Ms 62 comp wise.

Microsoft pmsquared OP Nov 8, 2018

Figured that based on the chart but also I’m on the east coast so cost of living mass increase so interested in how much it would actually end up being.

Google Uvor31 Nov 8, 2018

No idea how pm compares, but an l5 swe at G could trivially end up with 2x comp of a 62 swe at MS.

Does microsoft value pmp?

Microsoft pmsquared OP Nov 8, 2018

PMP cert? Optional for SPM roles.

Big pmping

Google's hiring committee doesn't consider internal offers, so the only way for you to leverage the Microsoft offer against Google is to take it.

Microsoft pmsquared OP Nov 8, 2018

Interesting.

Also, their hiring committee takes a very long time to land you in a spot. If you say, "I need some time", it could be up to two months. You're best to take the internal offer and move if you want Google later

How long ago did you interview for the Microsoft role? How long are they giving you to make a decision? Can you ask for more time?

Microsoft pmsquared OP Nov 8, 2018

Interviewed two weeks ago. Offer last week. Really quickly. They really want me - so I think I have two weeks which I believe is standard.

Microsoft eWji22 Nov 8, 2018

If they really want you I think they will give you more time once they notice you are not accepting it in two weeks

Microsoft eWji22 Nov 8, 2018

I was in a similar situation. I asked for more time at MSFT and I told Google about the deadline. And I got more time at Microsoft and Google speeded up my process a lot. Don't burn the bridges. Just tell them you want to make a stable decision and you need more time. Be polite and keep it professional and it'll work out.

Did you tell the G recruiter or hiring manager, and at what stage in the process?
