Experiencing extreme burn out and was just placed on a PIP (performance improvement plan). Teams have lost faith in me. How do I dig myself out of this? Anyone else experience extreme burnout in IB? Ive thought about throwing in the towel and leaving. Personally dont think this job is for me long term.
How do you know you’re on PIP?
Had a call with my manager who said so
Oh
I'm curious. By what measurement/evaluation do they do to determine that you're going on PIP? Do they disclose this kind of thing?
Not sure about the measurement, but essentially i missed a few deadlines
Just how bad is the mental toll? Did you intern in IB?
IB has gotten way worse since the interest rates have dropped, essentially lending is free and everyone is trying to get that cheddar. Have a few friends in IB that are getting burnt out and are trying to leave
Mental toll is pretty bad. The hours, expectation to always be present and to drop everything at a moments notice… forced to wake up super early for never ending zoom calls leading to late nights because you barely have time to complete actual work or research.
Are you an analyst? Never heard of this happening / mattering if analyst level. Might be more consequential as an assoc
Associate
It happens all the time from analyst level up, at least in London, but I think it's worst for associates - same expectations of beimg available at all hours and a lot more responsibility than an analyst. A lot of analysts were managed out over the past 18 months; a lot of associates chose to leave. There are definitely Corp dev roles out there for good IB juniors - my neighbour went from JPM junior associate to working at Bridgepoint in that sort of role.
YoE?
Start looking for a new job tbh
Yeah… already started looking. Get anxiety just thinking about my email. Time to get out.
What desk are you supporting?
Relax first half of your PIP on a vacation recharging and then prepare and give interviews in second half of PIP. Basically take your current employer and team out of the equation.
What does a pip in IB consist of? Also how bad of deadlines did you miss where this happens? Have honestly never heard of this.
Same, I have never heard of a PIP in IB. If anything they would just give you a shitty review
Could be an indication of how short staffed industry is. If anything, you maybe would get fired? Heard of one associate in lower middle markets shop get cut.
Look for exit opportunities now, even if you survive PIP you don’t like the work. With MS credential, you can get interviews easily.
Good point. Would like to go into corp dev but I am over large firm hierarchical structure.
