I see a bunch of Netflix folks going over to Disney and getting promoted (Netflix IC to D+ manager, Netflix manager to D+ director, Netflix director to D+ VP). I’ve also heard the pay is pretty bad though relative to Netflix. Are people mostly going to Disney for the title and not the comp? Also, is D+ affected by the 4 day return to office? That especially sucks. TC: 600k+
Horrible pay
It's not so bad anymore Manager+ now that we've aligned more with Hulu, it's not the same as Faang peak, but considering WLB I think it's fine. TC: 400k
The only people in DSS making $400k are top level SWE’s or VP+. Which are you? I interviewed for several laterals before the hiring freeze for Sr Manager roles and the comp was a fucking laughable pathetic joke
Nope, Sr Manager, 220 base, 55 bonus (awarded above target though), 132 RSU
Horrible pay and you’ll need a lobotomy to keep your sanity when working for inept leadership. It’s especially soul crushing to see talented people absorbed through acquisitions be treated like lackeys. Lifers took the low pay long ago and planned to retire in place. The new comers from Netflix will be sabotaged in short order by horrible politics and bureaucracy. Take a look at the number of DMED reorganizations in the past 5 years, I believe the ‘streaming’ workers have been reorg’d about 7 times in that span. You have to start over with proving yourself worthy of promotion with each new manager put in place. This is a place where dreams go to die and many people are waiting to take your place to fulfill a childhood aspiration. If you just want a paycheck and for family to think you’re cool to get free passes to Disneyland twice a year, it’s fine. I was literally disciplined at least once a month for helping another team when I should “let it fail” and let teams keep using a human powered spreadsheet instead. “Let it fail” is their tech motto, super frustrating waste of talent and opportunity.
That’s great insight! Thanks for posting this! As a follow up question (without any intention of being confrontational), do you mind if I ask you how much churn do you guys have?
The good work life balance is enforced by teammates and is the best attribute of working at Disney Streaming. This keeps many people from leaving and the churn is surprisingly low. Hulu and Bamtech teams are super talented and manage to protect teammates from corporate shenanigans, so if you are able to land a spot under their leadership than it could be a positive experience for you. I was trapped in DMED reorg swirl for years and the only benefit I gained was a logo on my resume for a better job elsewhere.
Are you planning to leave Netflix and join the Mickey Mouse Club too? Why?
It’s not bad but it isn’t on the level of other tech companies. Org dependent and all that and all dev based but a lead role puts you at 180k, 45% LTI, 20% bonus. Manager at 190k, 60% LTI, 20% bonus. If your goal is to max out your TC, don’t come to Disney. If you want WLB and working with passionate people, DSS could be a great place.
@wallstream - how often people get 100% or more of the bonus and LTI - is it guaranteed or there are cases where people didn’t get it or got it far less than 100%?
Everyone I know has gotten over 100%. Who knows this year tho.
600k? And you are planning on leave Netflix to join a company with the worst leadership…? The blind leading the blind org.
lol not at all but just curious since I’m seeing so many people jump ship. I like not going into the office.
They’re probably jumping ship for WLB as they’re maturing, having families, etc. that’s how Disney gets so much of its good talent, burnouts and people willing to trade comp for job security and WLB. Meanwhile most employees are mind-numbing levels of inept/lazy and the culture is premised on too many cooks in the kitchen at all times. We have succeeded despite all odds.
Is the grass greener there, Netflix? Genuinely asking
Disney is going to buy out Hulu over the next year. And some reorg will happen once that's done, Hulu will be absorbed into Disney+ most likely. I think there's a high risk that layoffs will ensue
Thing is already most of the tech teams are combined in hulu and dss ! So may be there will be layoff but it is not obvious at least in tech .
I concur, i have products in both d+ and hulu
Per data I analyzed from Levels.fyi, Netflix pays 2-4x what Disney does, and Netflix has a MUCH higher % of TC in cash, and much higher base salaries.
Yes and yes
