My understanding of the Holocaust was incorrect!
I’ve been recruited by Disney for a product role. My TC isn’t super high at Netflix and Disney can match or beat it. However, I’ve read and heard really mixed things. Any feedback about the product org, specifically in DMED? Thanks in advance. TC $225k
being recruited by Disney to the same org. What have you heard?
I’ve heard that WLB is good. That they just have everyone a big raise to try to make comp more competitive. Also that projects move very slowly and that there’s a lot of red tape to get anything approved. That there are a lot of growing pains and attrition in the eng org right now. That sometimes it’s a challenge to get alignment between product and engineering on priorities.
Highly accurate. I’m in DMED and the product managers seem to be content overall. A bunch of slow moving projects and coordination with stakeholders.
Following, I have a call on Monday with DMED I've heard that the compensation has been improving, but haven't seen anything about culture or tech stack.
Culture is dead at dmed.
When you say dead, do mean it's bad or just nonexistent? Would you say Disney Streaming is better? I've heard the merger with Hulu was BAD
That Mickey is a **tch
No, it's not any worse than any other large corporate conglomerate. There were a few events over the years that have led to certain subsets of people becoming jaded though, such as the Covid furloughs and re-orgs for example, so you have to take what you hear with a grain of salt. People from Hulu are especially jaded, and rightfully so, given how botched of a takeover that whole situation has been. With that said, its no where near as bad as it may seem. Especially here on Blind where it feels as though the most pessimistic individuals of the company vent their frustrations. Personally, I love my projects in the Corporate Tech side of the company, and likewise a lot of others are happy as well. Thats why the company is full of lifers. DMED is probably one of the more chaotic segments right now given all the shuffling and attrition as people in newly acquired companies rage-quit because they don't want to be under the Disney umbrella, but there are a lot of cool projects to be done as well if you join the right team. The compensation has improved dramatically over the past year, and I would say levels.fyi is no longer accurate. I recommend doing your due dilligence and asking the hard questions during the interviews, such as "is this position a brand new position or an existing role from someone who has left? If existing, why did they leave?" to make sure you're not joining a sinking ship of a team. So long as you do your due diligence, and you're happy with the proposed comp, then you've got nothing to lose imo
Thanks so much, these are great insights
Also, how’s the remote work culture? Are any PMs fully remote? I’m looking at a “hybrid” role but I don’t want a situation where I’m mandated to come in 3x a week or whatever
Disney Streaming Services in general has good wlb and you can coast and never get fired. Pay is not bad, health benefits are horrible especially if you have a family
How bad exactly are the health benefits?
They offer the cheapest PPO package of Cigna which is odd for such a large company. This means high deductible and expensive copays for doctor visits. Bad if you have a family. Expect to pay a lot more out of pocket
I wouldn't join Disney unless you just want to coast.
Disney streaming people: Is this true? That the only reason to join is to coast? I've heard the standards in dss are fairly high? arent you guys passionate about your work? A ton of faang people are being hired? arent those people fairly ambitious?
Honestly is depends on the team. Some teams have high standards, but others... not so much. There is a massive shift to change this mindset though and improve the culture overall. Still too early to tell how it will play out.
Some of the folks who moved over from Netflix in the past year are super talented and would be great for moving the culture forward
Unfortunately we just had two high level Netflix engineers quit, won’t work if they’re the only ones pushing against the tide
More like a tsunami. Positive change or evolution in any way is almost impossible with all the lifers sucking hope out of new hires and talented Hulu folks who got acquired.
Yes, join to coast
It’s a great place for WLB. Projects typically move slowly but it’s not worse than anything I’ve seen.
If levels is accurate, no. Disney can’t match your Tc, but it doesn’t hurt to speak to the recruiter.
They can match my TC. We have already had that discussion.
Match or increase by 20%. Probably not the hassle of moving companies without an increase unless there is some other benefit like WFh. What’s your YOE in the role.
