Title. Leveling is weird and no more stacked refreshers. There's just stock grants that are granted every year but these grants stay the same and to not increase over time. Comp is extremely flat until a promo and promo is already tough at Snap in the first place. The only good thing about it is there is no 3-4 year cliff like at other companies who need stacked refreshers to make up for the cliff
Explain their refreshers please.
From my understanding: Snap refreshers don’t stack, but they do give them. Grants vest over 3 years What I mean by they don’t stack: Snap refreshers are appended to your current grant. At F/G you get X RSUs over 3 years so once you hit 4 years you’re stacking three previous years of refreshers, whereas snap your “refresher” is basically just appending to your stock grant and you’ll get it three years later. So you get X/3 every year (even after year 3 - you still get the same X/3 amount in year 4, 5, 6,…) until you get promoted
No. At Snap, if you get X RSUs as a refresher, that X starts vesting in 2 years and finishes vesting in 3 years from when you get that X.
Fuck em. You get pay bumps and promos by moving, as a rule. So move.
This is exactly what Amazon does , just with much much lesser money .
And a shitty 5 15 40 40 rule or something like that
Exactly !! Much worse than snap and on top of it they assume 15% growth for stocks for year and adjust your compensation based on that , and we all know what a disaster it has been ,multiple in the past including this year
It sucks but a lot of people are ok with it because they don't want to stay at a company more than 3 or 4 years. Snap's first three year tc is still much bigger than a lot of other companies. Not many companies can offer sde2 or sde2.5 350k+ tc
They will give someone with 3yoe 190k RSU a year how is that bad?
Hi. Where do you see that number?
What do you mean they don’t grow over time. They have two years to appreciate (or depreciate) before vesting begins. I actually kind of like this because I never know if I want to sell or hold. If I am basically forced to virtually hold for two years, I feel a lot better about selling on vesting.
Who said Snap top company? Top TC maybe (especially if you joined in or before 2020). Top TC is implicitly to attract talent who else would have gone to Meta/G/MS. After all, anyone who can pass Snap leetcode hiring bar can pass the others, so there needs to be some extra incentive. Meta/G/MS work on a much larger and diverse set of problems, many times at larger scale, have more resume value on the mkt, and have easier leveling (ok, maybe not G on the leveling front).
Only a small amount of engineers in meta/g/aws are working in really challenging large scale problems. Most of the engineers are just creating crud api and they don't even know how bigtable and dynamodb work and scale internally. Same in facebook, a lot of engineers are just work on products and they do not have much knowledge of infrastructure.
I really don’t think MS has better resume value compared with Snap.
Neither poll option is accurate. This is not good for employees (the way it was before was better), but it doesn't mean comp sucks. Comp is still higher than FAANG and competitive with most startups. It's just that the no stacking makes it lower than it once was.
doesn't help
