Is it a good idea to join Netflix now as SDE?
Netflix was the only one in the game a few years ago, but now there’re so many streaming services and Netflix doesn’t stand out anymore. In the end Netflix is a content company and SDEs can only do so much. People go to streaming services for the shows, not for the marginally better latency/recommendation algorithms. Is it still a good idea to join Netflix or a similar company as SDE now?
Why do you care about nflx financial performance the comp is all cash. As an engineer this gives u the freedom to make cool shit without worrying about what shows/movies your company is acquiring. Let’s say something catastrophic happens and you theoretically get fired in a year you can land another job very easily
...compared with being paid 80% in RSUs/SARs/options this sounds like the dream. Watching your TC go up and likely down every day gets old fast.

Yes, profitable company, great pay and a lot of their shows are their own content. I think they are trying other things like gaming (not too sure how well) that’s going but I don’t see too many downsides to joining imo
The only games I saw were just existing ones ported to the Netflix app. Might as well just play on your phone.
