I am a non-SWE googler currently looking for other positions. I make an above average salary for my city but nothing astronomical. I've actually gotten fewer interviews than I had before working at Google, and had a couple recruiters come out and tell me they didn't think they could afford my salary... Before I even gave them my salary goal. They just assumed Google employee = huge compensation.
I have seen googlers get better treatment throughout the interview process. Anything from technical phone screens being waived to poor interview performance being overlooked. Not sure what happens at the offer stage. I think this is generally ok. The purpose of the interview process isn't to be fair to people. It is to get good candidates with as few false positives as possible. Hiring from a place known for holding a high bar is a fairly straightforward approach.
It depends. It will definitely make most companies consider you. Just as with a college degree. But once you're at the on-site, the only thing that will help you is your actual knowledge and interviewing ability.
I think there is a bar. If you are from Google and perform OK then you will be treated better. If you perform below average then you will be treated worse, as people will wonder how'd you got into Google. So the key is you have to meet average bar.
