Is yelp only good for interns / new grads??
I’ve been reading a lot (on Glassdoor n other forums) about how yelp is good to intern at or start your career but not so much for experienced individuals, as it seems to lack a clear roadmap for growth. Is this at all true? Also, that there’s not a great deal of game changing / innovative work happening there. Would you guys list out few teams that are really hot and good to join at this time? Specifically any comments on yelp res/no-wait teams?? Thanks in advance.
My old roommate worked there, he left after 3 months. He did obviously did not like it.
Yelp as a product is pretty awful but I learned a shit ton there. The engineering on the team I interned on was pretty intense and had a lot of talented engineers. I didn’t get a return offer, but I probably learned the most out of Yelp than I did my other 3 internships.
Nowait is hot. Local services is on fire and they even focused the last hackathon on local services. Yelp actually juuuuust last week added Levels to engineering. IC1 to IC6 for SWE, and EM1-EM# for manager to director. Offer letters will now list a specific level when you join, and the compensation (while private) is clearly defined as a relative % of other level comp bands.
No-wait part of local services? Or are they independent teams/orgs?
Also if you don’t mind me asking, I see you’re at IC3.. is this based on years at yelp/industry or any other contributing factor? How is it being determined for new hires?
Hey, how would you map these levels to say Microsoft (or goog/fb/amazon) levels?
The expectation is that you are a new grad, you reach level 2 after 1 year with the company, and 2-3years after that to get to level 3, so you can interpolate using that (Other companies generally having 2 and 2 in their split).
very roughly I would say that IC1 to IC6 is like T3 to T8 at google
I agree with the sentiment that Yelp is a great place for starting your career. As an intern the events are awesome and you get some of the most interesting projects to work on. For new grads it's a cool place with good WLB and very little pressure to perform and deliver and lots of opportunities to learn and lead. But the charm ends after 1-2 years because Yelp's comp for senior level is pretty bad, there is no clear growth path as an engineer and a lot of hand waving from management, unless you move to become a manager. Good engineers tend to leave the company after 1-2 years because of this and the few who remain back stay for the chilled out environment and WLB
