Joining Facebook

Have an offer from Facebook as e5 185k /500k/30k this is 30% over my current compensation at msft I have spent 10 years at Microsoft with 17 yoe. Should I take it up. I am just so scared. I am 40 and have a toddler to take care of. Have heard Facebook wlb is bad there is rampant age discrimination with females. Thoughts I just want to run away

I’d take the offer. Microsoft has a history of low balling longer tenured employees. Plus, there’s a whole lot less BS to deal with at Facebook. Overall, you’ll be happier at fb.

OP, take it from someone whose parent had a great paying, stable job which treated him like crap for 30 years... jump ship! A happier work will help make a happier home. If it doesn’t work out, you can jump. Otherwise your kid will notice your stress and sadness.

This is a pretty good pay but ur answer depends on which ladder. If hw then u will travel and u need someone to take care of child. If sw, it is manageable. Pls clarify.

Not sure I understand your logic. The Google interview is usually simpler than the FB interview. Of course there is always an element of luck. To make it less risky, just try going to Google directly, but the pay won’t be as high as FB, and they will try to downlevel you as well (to an L5 I think in your case).

No. I am down levelled. Manager makes fun of me in the team as they think I won't leave. I don't have any godfather's in msft. The only thing is wlb. 320 days I just need to work from 11 - 2 2 days a week to do my assigned work. I don't take any additional responsibility as manager does not encourage and us sarcastic. Constantly 120% rated in msft

Would your team at Microsoft welcome you back if things didn't work out at FB? If so I'd definitively go for it, otherwise you'll have to be mindful to stay in good interviewing shape or be able to weather a little time off with if things don't work out at FB while you find another job. In any way, if your downside is covered, go for it! FB will be an awesome addition for your career and I'm sure you'll do great :). Good luck!

This. 10 years at MS, don't burn bridges on way out. Ask manager and HR likely chances of coming back. People understand wanting to try something new.

I would take it. If you are concerned about age and female. Ask your recruiter to connect you with some from the “Facebook Connection” program that is a female engineer. This is a kind of mentorship for potential candidate to learn more about Facebook from someone similar to them.

Take it. Wlb is something you can set boundaries around. Kid friendly company and lots of great people in Seattle office. Remember growth happens just outside your comfort zone.

You can’t really coast at Fb like you might at Msft. It’s important to show impact to get MA or more. Also, most people at Fb will be much younger with less responsibilities. That said, it’s a significant pay bump, well respected position, and you will learn a lot. If you find yourself struggling, it’ll be easier to find another job and pay shouldn’t drop.

Do it. and Negotiate for more. Too long at one company doesn’t look good anymore. Extra money can pay for more childcare. 4 months full pay if you have another kid. You can also move teams to one that’s more family friendly or has female leadership next year

You said ‘age discrimination against females’ so I assume your female. A team with female leadership could be more family friendly. Overall FB has high numbers of female PMs and female leadership. Also, be a morning overtimer. Answer critical emails when you’re up early if you can’t stay late because of family. Check out Women in Product group.
