L5 Google SWE looking to maximize TC

Looking to jump to other places as a SWE. Generalist, don’t know shit about ML/AI and I don’t know shit about quant trading (yet). Companies I am thinking I should apply to: Netflix, Stripe, Jane Street, Two Sigma, Citadel Securities, HRT, Optiver, Jump, Roblox, LinkedIn, Snowflake, Databricks Which others should I be looking at for those lucrative $500k+ senior offers? Current TC: $330k YOE: not gonna say cause then people get distracted from the question

Is the yoe that high or low? (I wasn't really curious about your yoe until you brought it up lol)

Google protogeeee OP Mar 14, 2023

It’s pretty low (less than 4, more than 3). It’s just that I’ve seen other people reveal their YOE and then people ignore the question and declare that they should just be happy with their current job. Despite the fact that internal promo at Google is hard af and you’ve already proven yourself as senior.

NewRelic Tp0G4 Mar 14, 2023

Story of my life lol. No one in leadership will accept you for your young age

Google qlqidcu Mar 14, 2023

Join any top tech firm as upper band Senior or Staff and you can pull $500K+ easy. Trading firms, maybe, but the bonus heavy comp isn't ideal and comp is significantly lower than 2021/2022 from my experience. As an L5 some of my quant finance offers were below $500K so it really varies company to company. Tech is a better deal IMO if you can swing L+1/L+2

Google protogeeee OP Mar 14, 2023

I don’t think I’ll be able to swing L6 based on my current experience & projects, but hopefully a couple senior offers pitted against each other can get the senior TC pretty high. Ty for your input!

Google qlqidcu Mar 14, 2023

You can swing Staff at small-mid sized companies if you're already L5 at Google. Between that, moving laterally to a different big tech firm, and top hedge funds and prop trading shops, you can certainly swing $500K+ with <4 YOE. I did it a few years ago but I'd imagine it's a bit harder now :-)

Uber, but probably not 500. More like 400 to 450

Google 🌹 garden Mar 14, 2023

Is 5b also senior?

Uber amgalan Mar 14, 2023

No. They renamed it last year to staff

Roblox fje62 Mar 14, 2023

Given your pretty low YOE you should just be happy with your current job 😜🤣

Google protogeeee OP Mar 14, 2023

Alright, that was kinda funny

LinkedIn wtrc45 Mar 15, 2023

Ya def low YOE, otherwise op will be targeting L6

Roblox FabrezeAir Mar 14, 2023

Ping me if you want referral at Roblox. Check TC at levelsFyi.

Google protogeeee OP Mar 14, 2023

You think I could swing IC4 as L5? IC3 seems like it would be a slight step backwards.

Roblox fRGC22 Mar 15, 2023

I think ic4 with 4 yoe is doable. You’d have to nail the interview though.

LinkedIn chatgeept Mar 14, 2023

L5 at LinkedIn doesn’t offer 500k

Databricks plantainet Mar 16, 2023

You likely get L5 here with your YOE, and L4 wouldn't be a significant raise if at all.

MongoDB mdbw Mar 17, 2023

How did you reach L5 so fast?

Google protogeeee OP Mar 17, 2023

Not really that hard tbh

MongoDB mdbw Mar 17, 2023

You must still be an outlier tho, so care to elaborate a little?

Climb the goog ladder, you’ve already got momentum Cash in with a lateral move when your at senior staff. That will be $1M+ payday very likely, more if stocks grow Aggressive hopping and even finance etc will have a lower ceiling than legitimately becoming high up in faang / top startups. High position on the Google ladder may not pay as much in house but your career will really be elevated a f Basically people are fed up w promo cuz it sucks but since you’re so young and already have momentum why not aggressively grind for L6 for a few years and see if you can get it I know several L5->L6s in 2 years and L6->L7 in 3 TLDR if your rising star status, take it as far as you can for the best positioning. If successful then you can cash out later for much more

Op, Curious, Did you interview?
