I currently work in a small team as the unofficial tech lead and have been offered to do a lateral move to a tech lead/engineering manager hybrid role. This new role does not come with better TC, but has it's load of downsides. For example, rotation for on-call and lesser dev workflows. I am afraid on missing out and being stuck at my current level if I do not accept this opportunity even though I like what I am doing right now. I see myself doing one of three things: 1. Move on to the next team and let my manager know that I expect significant TC upgrade if I fill out the shoes properly. 2. Move on to the next team and not share my expectations in terms of TC in fear of sounding cocky. 3. Stay where I am and wait for a future opportunity. From your experience, what should I do. Move, make it clear you expect to be compensated for it in the next cycle, and bail if they don't pony up.
You can afford to wait. Trust me — in the new role you will reach those points where you are working off <5 hrs of sleep multiple nights in a row, cancelling dates with your s/o, falling behind on the hobbies you love, calling your mom less, and spending more of the same amount of money on stuff you don’t need to destress. Today’s cult work mentality is good at persuading people to work more for the same or less money than you could get elsewhere, by convincing you you have to do it for your career and that your career is #1. Both are myths to exploit labor of you. You should only go to the new team if you are going to love the work you do on it, simple as that. Otherwise, wait. There will be many other opportunities.
You seem like a good manager. Let me know if you need people on your team. It might come in handy if my decision ends up with significant negative effects ;)
Sure, PM me if you are interested in great SDE opportunities in AWS
I think you are missing option 4 - start interviewing at other companies.
Because my TC is too low I presume?
No, because I think you are in a good position to move.
I have decided to pass on the opportunity. I told my current manager about my concern for the current team if I leave and will get an official title for staying in my role. Thanks for your replies.
