Layoffs continuing ..

Someone help me understand this: Almost every company is reporting good numbers in their earnings but they are laying off employees on a regular basis. The stock market seems to be doing okay as well. What’s happening ? #google #twitch

Elon Musk got everyone thinking they can manage with a leaner workforce. He took it to an extreme and fucked up though

This is Republican thinking and trickle down economics. Give the rich money, and they’ll hire people. No… hiring is only necessary if there’s a high chance hiring more will generate more profits. If the company is generating massive profits, but hiring will not increase that, then hiring makes no sense. In a similar vein, if the company has massive profits, and laying people off won’t affect that (and in fact, will decrease costs and increase profits), then it only makes sense to do layoffs. In a capitalist society, employment is only a means to an end. A company doing well DOES NOT mean your job is safe. Maybe the only good indicators for job stability is if the company is growing (and hope it continues to) or you’re absolutely necessary to keep things running.

To add to that, the capitalist impulse is to automate and replace labor with automation.

They all got caught with their pants down in over hiring so now are trying to fix those mistakes regardless of economic outlook.

“They” messed up but yet “they” all kept their jobs.

It’s part overhiring. Part demand for new skills. AI isn’t taking jobs, it is reshuffling company priorities for skilled workers.
