Any insight into what the Entra Access team is like at Microsoft? After talking to the recruiter, seems like the majority of the team are based on the West Coast, I'm in Dublin. So the 8 hour time difference might be a pain. With a toddler, my evenings are already pretty hectic! What's WLB, culture, vibe, etc. like? In Mastercard, my org outside Dublin are mainly East Coast or India so collab time is never too much of an issue. The culture has changed substantially recently & morale is pretty low with RTO mandate, sensor tracking, removing flex Friday's, layoffs (outside Dublin), etc. WLB is my highest priority right now, much more than TC. Current TC: €110K Future TC: no offer yet but est. €110 - €150K #tech #microsoft #mastercard #microsoftemployees #microsoftinterview
If WLB is your primary priority, stick to your current job. You don’t have that time to prove yourself to the new employer and you know very well you’ll have to do that.
The Msft role is a level down from the MC role, so part of me is wondering if since it's a lower level then the expectations might be lower. Probably wishful thinking!
See if you can find out more about the expectations from the role. Ask for a chat with the HM and see if you ask questions like: - how much vacation did your team take this year? - did your team end up working on the weekends?
Join Msft for 6 months and do an internal transfer to a European team
I like this plan, also keep in mind that you are consdiering joining them in their peak evaluation I would tread carefully
In Msft is it fairly easy to transfer after only 6 months? MC tend not to allow transfers before 12m.
If you are happy at MasterCard and the offer isn't competitive stay with MasterCard. I assume this team under Identity organization. If it's, The WLB isn't so great.
Mastercard has layoffs? What is your level at MC compared to MSFT? From what I have observed based on people who joined from Mastercard, Mastercard senior is like MSFT lower band sde 2. Regardless, some teams dont have budget to hire for US so they hire in other places. That might be your case. MSFT used to chill but I am hearing more and more terminations. I dont think its worth jumping right now. Stay there.
Yeah MC have just (internally) announced layoffs on Jan 31st. All effected roles are outside Europe so the full details haven’t trickled down to Dublin yet but I've heard (through the grapevine) that the recent layoffs are the 1st of 3 waves planned for this year. I'm not sure how true that is. Looks like it's mostly effecting Progam/Product roles not SDE so far. Dublin will prob be least effected by layoffs due to our stricter laws around the redundancy consultation process & like you mention lower TC in general. At MC I'm a Lead. MSFT role is Senior. Yeah I think the general market conditions over the last couple of years has everyone more on edge changing company.
Lead to senior at Mastercard is probably same level. I dont think its downlevel. If MC is laying off that is strange. Regardless, for your case its best if you stay imo. You are safer from layoffs at current compnay than any new company unless your performace is below average or your department is not proven. Was MC layoff big? Whats the employee count impact and total employee number?
Didn’t you ask this question during your interviews? If they are hiring in Dublin for such a geographically diverse team, there has to be a plan as to how to manage such scenarios. Besides that I think that team is doing some cool things, you should join.
Yeah, it was the first Q I asked during the first call when I heard where all the direct team were based. Recruiter didn't seem to have much detail as to why. I'll obvs ask more Qs as I go through each stage of the interviewing process. I've a call with HM later this week so I'll get more info then, but wanted to get some impartial info from Msft employees ahead of the call. I might be getting ahead of myself with this post because I know it's a 5 round interview process. But a recruiter reached out to me directly to ask if I wanted to apply. I've heard that headhunting at the Senior level in Msft is not that common in Dublin. But don't know how true that is.
I wouldn’t take Entra for WLB. Also, I have similar situation with kids and leaving office before 6pm is hard when your reporting team is west. I manage but it does have a hit on what you can achieve. Either stay late and thrive or put boundaries and get a so/so rating.
Not sure about that team specifically. My two cents - working that kind of time difference with a child sounds like a nightmare.
