Hi! I left my career in medical equipment sales (GE) after about a year. I started fresh out of college and had to unexpectedly leave because my grandfather needed my care. Now my father has been diagnosed with cancer and I am feeling urgent to find a new job so I can help financially support my family. I’ve been applying to many jobs for 2 weeks and haven’t had an interview. I was a 4.0 student, 2 degrees, and an excellent employee (always exceeded quota/top of team). I’m not sure what to do. I would need a remote job as I still have my personal responsibilities (if not more). Does anyone know any medical equipment companies who are actively hiring remote workers? Any other career ideas that might allow the flexibility I need? I was salaried at $55k. Thank you.
Assuming if you’re in the US, take some paid family medical leave to care for your father. Family and self is always a priority And I agree with Scooby, a lot of remote SDR/BDR roles that pay that base alone and is remote. Great way to get into tech/SaaS and very flexible too
I attempted to get family medical leave, but was denied because at the time only my grandfather needed me and apparently grandparents don’t qualify. (I guess they don’t expect people to have different family dynamics than normal) Maybe this can be a good opportunity to get a better job with better pay… it just has yet to actualize.
Hi there, First of all, I'm really sorry you're going through this. It's not easy. For FMLA, get a new form and have a nurse or doctor sign it for you. Are you bringing your dad to infusions? Oncology nurses are amazing and will help you with whatever you need. They'll even get on the phone with insurance if there's any pushback. I was in the same position as you and went on FMLA when my dad was sick. A hospice nurse filled out the form and it was accepted. There are a ton of third party recruiters hiring for their clients, even in this market. Try to connect with someone at Captivate Talent, Three Pillars Recruiting, CloserIQ, iQuest Partners, or MediaOne Partners. All of these agencies have connections and are looking to hire for small to medium sized companies. A lot of recruiters post on their LinkedIn what roles they're trying to fill. Don't try to land something at a FAANG company right now. They are mostly all on hiring freezes and you'd likely be backfilling for someone who was doing 1.5x the work. Most importantly, be kind to yourself and make sure you get what you need.
Try to find a remote BDR role, you’ll find a job faster and be paid more
