Hey all. I have 10 yoe in the ad agency world in various creative/strategy/content roles. Looking to make a career change into tech, in either a PMM or PM role. What would be the most direct route to get there? MBA, Product School, startup, foot in door in a seperate role, hustle and spin the resume, something else entirely? Appreciate any insight.
Inb4 just LeetCode endlessly till you hate life and all of existence... Then go apply at FAANG.. Acquire job at FAANG and boast about your TC on blind.. Realize your TC is not high enough.. Ego trip and lash out on Blind in response to insecurity about dick size (TC).. Loop ad nauseam..
I did this. Message me and I can give some insights. This assumes you’re not an idiot. Many people from agencies are mouth-breathing morons, but your desire to get away from that world suggests you may not be. PMM is probably the best route. I’m UX; it’s quite different from what I did in agencies but the attention to detail and experience with tight deadlines and working with entitled & empowered imbeciles was good training.
Echoing this, everyone I worked with coming from the ad world struggled in tech because most were morons.
Yeah. There aren’t many smart people in agencies, but there are plenty who think they’re brilliant misunderstood geniuses. I’ve tried helping a few former colleagues transfer to tech but it’s usually more frustrating than not.
I did it. Feel free to PM!
🙄 Spoken like a PM. 🤮
