PSC is over at Meta and I want to relax a bit before things start running again next week. So doing an AMA and referral thread. Here's a little bit about me: 2014 summer: intern in Feed ML 2015 summer: intern in marketplace ML 2016: Joined Marketplace ML in March as E3 2017: Landed a big product (which exists today!) and reached E4 in Feb 2018: Moved to Feed in the middle of the half and worked on some advanced RecSys ML stuff, nothing landed so didn't get a promo 2019: Work from 2018 finally landed (but in a different way than originally planned). Promoted to E5 in the summer. Moved to an ML infra group 2020: Started TLing a small team (3-5 people) and tried to attempt E6, failed twice 2021: Continued on the same team, delivering a lot of medium wins and nothing huge, finally landed the E6 promo in the summer. The packet at the time of promo had me TLing a 9 IC team with no direct manager (M2 was running the team) and landing medium sized projects consistently for 18 months 2021: Transitioned to TLM in July and hired 2 more folks. Currently running a 11 IC ML infra team. YOE: 6 TC: 240 * 1.2 (bonus) + 1300(RSU) * 330 = 715k(ish) AMA anything about how FB has changed in the last 6 years, anything else on your mind and of course SWE/PM referrals :) _____________________________________ EDIT: Hey folks! This blew up more than I expected it to and I don't think I'll be able to answer most of the questions. Also I keep tripping some Blind spam counters for commenting too much and it keeps locking me out for 30 minutes. I'll keep checking in once in a while but I'm mostly done with this post. Hope I contributed meaningfully at least a little bit and you took away something useful from this thread. Happy long weekend!

Hm if you’re a manager don’t you have packets to write? How is it over for you?
Not doing anything today. Mini burn out

How cut throat is at meta? Heard has been much better in wlb but wonder your thoughts. Which kind of engineers are pivoted?
Depends on org. Ads and a few other orgs have a lot of investment so it's more competitive to get ratings and promo.
Thanks for the answer. Another q is, hows meta MLE job? Do they choose what area they want to focus such as science side or infra side or they should care both? Amazon has applied scientist role more like MLE focused on ML practitioner side but it seems hard to find this role from outside (yes amzn has lower bar on ML :) )
What's the new band for L5 PM look like ?
Sorry I don't know this
Is this history not enough to find who you are ?
Obviously some details are obfuscated /changed 😉
Wow. That’s awesome. You are a rockstar
I have a better than average trajectory but not the best by a long shot. I know folks who made E6 at 3 YOE
damn! Wtf. At 13 years exp I’m still scraping the bottom of TL barrel. Sigh.
Could you DM me for PM referral? Also, how are the projects at your current org? Loads per sprints perhaps?
You have to dm him wtf
Guy probably ran out of free DMs lol
Impressive career trajectory. What success metrics are used to measure if a person deserves a promotion at Meta? Are there minimum years needed to stay in one level before moving up?
The official rubric is: "consistently performs at next level". Since no one defined what"consistently" meant, you can expect some subjectivity there. For example: I feel like I deserved my E6 at the end of 2020 but didn't make it cuz of tenure.
No strict minimum years. But minimum experience and behaviors to be shown and promo is trailing showing such behaviors and skills
How to go from IC6 to ic7
I'll tell you in 6-12 months 😪
I wouldn't be able to help answer that objectively since I fall more on the left socially. Although I can understand your frustration since I'm fiscally conservative and many of my colleagues' opinions on taxes does get me riled up at times. I guess the way to maintain sanity is to better curate your workplace feed and keep non work opinions outside of work.
Was it because of the 'AXE EFFECT'?
Used to be. These days it's the Vaxx effect.
