Sharing a list of questions I have around on how it will play out - 1. The discussion is predominantly around buying US operations. What does that mean? Will there be a new app in app store for US users, i don't think how otherwise business/engg will be separated. 2. If yes, then who gets to keep name Tiktok. Don't think bytedance will have that away to Microsoft. If not, then Microsoft may have a huge problem in building that new app branding. 3. What about countries other than US or China. While the talk is about buying US operations but practically it seems to me, it going to more about non-China operations. For e.g. Indian/Brazilian users, etc. will more likely trust US operations and will quickly like to switch over to US app. So Bytedance might be losing much more than US market. 4. What does it mean for Chinese companies going forward? They wont to able to capture global market in software industry ever with such precedence. 5. Why Bytedance is not looking to file a lawsuit against US government? Does it mean they really have something to hide? 6. A social network till now was not bound by boundaries. But now for content creators outside US, they will have to choose where to manage their business. Which practically means eventually one app will win the market and the other will die (most likely US app will win over all the non-China market). Overall it feels like a really bad precedence for companies out side US. US is the biggest consumer market(money), but it should not mean only US companies are allowed to server(profit from) them. #tech #microsoft #tiktok #business
Tiktok is already a new app. Different from the app in China.
Yes this ^. The TikTok of China is Douyin
thanks that helps, but the bigger problem still remains. The acquisition is not of whole TikTok but only US operations which are about 20% users. What about the other 80% users. Under which brand they will continue to use the app. Tiktok or something new? Will bytedance give away the brand Tiktok for just US market?
I’d have the same question, is MS buying TikTok global? To add to the complexity, I believe TikTok shared a lot of common services and infrastructure with other Bytedance apps and you can just cleanly cut it out like that

“Why Bytedance is not looking to file a lawsuit against US government? Does it mean they really have something to hide?” Every Chinese companies who got unfairly kicked out for being Chinese tried this. It never worked. Are you going to sue Xi Jinping in China? That’s how Chinese companies see US government: a pure evil tyrant who only understands threats and bribery. American judiciary system doesn’t have good reputation in China as well.
