Microsoft - voicing my frustration

I want to share my experience Last connect cycle i asked my manager ( lets call him M) about where am i from my promotion he replied ' i am not thinking of a promotion '. Obviously he doesn't realize that a promotion is about the employee not the manager and that his role is to support and guide not sit back and decide. Anyway, i realized that it was time for me to move to another team. I was accepted for another role and the new manager (lets call him T) was very excited about me joining his team. T also advised that he will place his recommendation for a level up job offer. T asked to reach out for my manager M. One week later - and since i didn't hear back from neither of them - i asked T about any progress. T advised that he decided not to proceed with the job offer as HR advised that 'i have performance issues' I never had any performance issues since i joined MS : my bonus and connects reflect this. I raised a HR request to find out whether it is possible that someone might have performance issues not logged in connects. They advised that this can't happen and all my records are clean. Apparently my current manager stopped the move and they couldn't find a more respectful and smart way to do it. So no .. MS is not an equal opportunity company, politics has an upper hand

I would raise the question about performance issues further. If your manager is telling you that you've had a performance issue, but there is no record of it, then they need to tell you specifically what performance issue they are referring to. At the very least so you can address the issue. Sounds like you've made an enemy somewhere though. Politics is the most important at all companies. Don't ignore it or think you're better than it. You need solid relationships to move up in any company.

Bad performance issue was a communicated by the other team's manager and he said that was HR feedback. I raised a case with HR to find out more details. They advised they never gave this feedback :) .. someone is lying .. also if my manager thinks that i have performance issues - wouldn't he be thrilled to get rid of me in such a way ? :)

I don't think it's safe to assume that managers are to support and guide you... They are first and foremost there for TC and as middle management they are not going to side with you 99% of the time :/ I also recently asked my old job for ALL personal files on me and it's not even for everything I've ever seen. My first thought for a corporation is they're not being truthful

To me it seems rather fishy that T would tell you that HR told them you have a performance issue - T could have made up the whole thing because M told T not to hire you because M doesn't want to lose you and then figure out a replacement. M may have themselves told T that there is a performance issue just to avoid losing you and going through the pain of getting a replacement. If you are not getting the promotions you think you deserve, best to look outside. I heard you may have performance issues ๐Ÿ˜Ž

Sounds like you got into some politics with your current manager. I'd suggest you switch companies, not just teams. Will be so much better for your mental health. If you're having issues with M, chances are high more people are struggling with the same thing. After I left my previous team (very similar state of things to what you've described), four more people did in a matter of a single month. It was a pretty good clue for our skip ๐Ÿ™‚
