Hi, Total YoE: 5.5 Current Position: Microsoft - SDE2 (62) TC: INR 50L Location: Bangalore, India Offered Position: Amazon - SDE2 (L5) TC: CAD 200k Location: Vancouver, Canada Is it worth moving to Canada for Amazon at offered TC and leave Microsoft? My long term plan is to settle in India even if I stay outside for a few years. #amazon #microsoft #canada #vancouver #india #bangalore
Op can u tell how did u get the opportunity of amazon vancouver? Referral? Direct apply?
Why Amazon in Canada? Come to the US, 5yoe should be at least 250tc here
Can't get hired into US as external hire.
If you do want to go outside, see how much MSFT internal transfer to US will pay. Then choose MSFT US vs Amzn Canada.
50L in India is so much better than 200k in Vancouver especially if you don’t want to permanently leave India.
What's 50L in CAD?
50L INR is ~86.8K CAD but cost of living in India is quite less as compared to Canada.
What if you get piped in Amazon ?
Is it as bad in Canada as US? None of my friends got piped in Amazon, though data on blind is a bit scary about that.
Anything could happen. Indeed, Data is scary and it is more scary when you get to know it has no correlation to ur performance. So bro, also take into account that factor too. Had I been at ur place I would have opted out. Why to take risk for no reason. Money is that high that you will get rich in 6 months?
If you don’t plan on staying, it’s probably not a good idea to come to Canada. You can get higher TC in the US if you go in expecting not to stay long term.
OP, move to Seattle instead of Vancouver if TC is the factor. However, for experience I will definitely suggest you to go out of your comfort zone and give it a try :). NOTE: I was in Vancouver, in AWS. Loved the place but 200k TC is pretty much max. You will hear numbers like 300K CAD but those are for higher exp and SDE3s. Also no one will pay more than Amazon in Vancouver. Keep in mind that marginal tax above 220K CAD in Vancouver is 53%.
Thanks for inputs :) Seattle isn't an option right away. Only good thing I'm finding about moving to Vancouver is experience of living there. Savings will be only slightly better than India.
With 200k cad,you should be getting around 140k after tax.... you would definitely make double than what you are making in india. Plus you dont want to settle means you wouldnt buy RE which is only significant expensive thing in vancouver. So you dont need to worry about that.... I would choose to come to vancouver for experience and little bit more money.
Op: let us know what you decide. Also like others said, this decision cannot be made on numbers. It's about what you want, if you want to live in developed society and have that exposure, please go. If it's solely for numbers or growth, stay
It was really confusing but I decided to stay and decided not to join 'Amazon'
if you want to settle down in India then stay in India. you have an amazing TC in India and it will grow in the future. if you want a better lifestyle then move to Canada. Note: with that Indian TC you can visit Canada twice a year. lol
I don’t know about amazon offers but I feel like for 5 yoe you should at least get 250k. I don’t know if it’s too late to get competing offers yet.
How much should be the range in Canada for 12 yoe?
It varies a lot depending on where you work. With those YOE, Apple ICT4s can get 400k+. I have 2 data points for ICT4s at amp that I’ve spoken to from Vancouver.
