Who has the most interesting hardware R&D group in the world right now? Physics-hard problems are always the most interesting. Subject matter should be significant to human race, no apps. Team should be well funded but not too corporate. I was considering the following. CommonWealth Fusion Systems ASML SpaceX Google X Tesla CERN D-Wave 10 YOE / Mechanical Engineer Former entrepreneur/founder (acquired by Fortune 500) Former SpaceX
you mentions physics R&D so as ex-physicist I can offer some advice. especially since you mention CERN. 1. there is no money made in fundamental physics research like discovering the Higss Boson, these are government funded and the funding is at the mercy of politics to some extent. EU funding seems more stable but in the US someone like Trump can kill the funding pretty much to zero. I have worked with several national labs and you have to constantly fight for the money. 2. Without a PhD, relevant thesis and solid post-doc research background plus publications you will not be considered for most of the these positions so I assume you have that. entrepenuer / founder etc. (even successful) has 0 value for these jobs. well If you bring and donate many millions they will give you a title but they won't let you touch anything 2. "Subject matter should be important to human race". what does that mean? anything can be important to human race or the humans wouldn't be doing it. it's a matter of perspective. 3. from the companies semiconductor companies that have a fab are pretty much the only ones who need to do somewhat basic physics R&D but this is not for the sake of understanding of the physics but for making or improving a product and selling it for profit. companies like Intel, TSMC and IBM used to invest heavily in solid state physics R&D looking at different material systems and their physics at atomic level etc. but that research has slowed down / lost funding with the demise of Moore's law. 4. the same companies and others that do rudimentary work on quantum computing but that's better done at Academia (post Doc) 5. there are other types of jobs related to nuclear physics, high power lasers, cryogenic IR sensors etc. all very interesting and challenging. but in one way or the other they are tied to DOD or DOE. they require level 1 security clearance from the Federal government. Pay is not the highest but benefits are amazing and for life. The job is for life too, some even carry military ranks. you won't be able to talk to anyone about your work even remotely until death. all of this since you mentioned " Physics-hard problems" and CERN but maybe you meant something totally different. good luck
Lam Research does some pretty cool work in this area. They make the tools to fabricate the chips that AMD, Intel etc are designing; so to some extent they need to be a step ahead of the game. You would need a PhD for most of the design positions.
RAIN Neuromorphics, though probably not well-funded
At Samsung semiconductors R&D, we are doing some really exciting and cool stuff.
@bootcode I'd like to know more about this!
2 teams within Intel. Intel labs as well as Intel DC teams. Some of the futuristic projects are super interesting. One main reason why I came here.
@TripHazard I would like to know more about these teams!
How hard is it to get into intel labs?
Hardware for time travel in Series-B stage. DM me sometime in June 2040 and I will get you an interview with them in the next couple of weeks.
Haha good one
For someone with such idealistic view about science and ‘human race’...it’s probably not a good idea for you to join hardware R&D...the reality is that, the job will bore you to the death and the pay will make you cry; your work will not be appreciated nor rewarded nor even remembered after 3 years; making semiconductors (or any hardware) is like making clothes now: only 0.1% of people makes money and the rest is just hard labor

Ex-Googlers: where did you go, and are you happier there?
AMD Research has openings and is doing some very exciting work. Work is absolutely beyond just apps, and has impact on all of humanity. Check out 'Frontier, Exascale' of you need an example.
I happened to sit next to a guy on the ski lift that was a project manager for the Frontier Exascale project. Good suggestion, I'll look into it.
