#seattle Have accepted an offer with AMZN and will be moving from the east coast to the Seattle side. Have not lived here before. I have friends @ amazon, fb and msft who all say conflicting preferences in terms of neighbourhoods. The recent shooting incident did not inspire confidence about selecting seattle proper but i dont want to waste an hour each way commuting. Wife isnt going to start working right away so it makes sense for us to pick a place which suits both of us. We did not have a car before and loved walking everywhere for our daily chores. While, i dont mind driving, i would like to keep my dependency to a car to a minimum. We are a married couple with no kids. I would love to know if there are people commuting from Bellevue to Seattle and is it worth it? If not then any areas closer to SLU which are relatively safe?
Blv dt is nice but commute will kill you, unless there are direct Amzn shuttles. SLU is safe, so are more residential areas like Fremont, Ballard etc. Northwestern parts of Seattle dt are OK too.
There are direct shuttles to/from bellevue AMZN campus (near the mall) to the two seattle AMZN campuses every half hour
If you don't want to drive, stay away from Eastside. Look at North belltown (past vine or so), lower queen Anne, or cap hill.
These are more affordable areas or more desirable places to live?
1) OP didn't focus on affordability (and not like Bellevue is.cheap either) 2) for easy commute and minimal car dependence, which OP focused on, these are good options 3) I personally would much prefer to live in these areas than Bellevue or Redmond, which I find boring and depressing
If you prefer walking everywhere, you will need to live in downtown Seattle or Bellevue. Otherwise, you will need a car regardless if you take the bus or drive to work.
We will eventually get a car. One of our friends used to live in Cap hill and didnt get a car for a full year. Used to uber occasionally and was pretty fine she said
DT bellevue is safer than DT seattle?
No one lives in downtown seattle. Just live in the neighborhoods
Hah! thats pretty straight forward! love the assertion
I, and many people, do. There are nice new residential high-rises in Seattle dt. ~40 floors, awesome views, and great amenities, including swimming pools and rooftops
I lived in downtown Bellevue and worked in downtown Seattle (Amazon SLU) for two years and loved it. Taking the amazon Shuttle from near the Amazon building in Bellevue was super convenient. 30 min door to door, wifi on bus so I could work or watch shows. If I miss the bus I can work/take calls from the Amazon Bellevue lobby. Apartments nearby include Soma Towers (dm me for referral), Bellevue Towers (privately owned, look through Craigslist for listings). There’s a bunch more. DT Bellevue doesn’t need a car, but depending on your lifestyle you may want to leave Bellevue every now and then for which you’d need a car or Uber. Public transportation is alright here. All in all, I personally love living in Bellevue much more than Seattle - but it depends on you and your family.
JFYI late last year I switched to MSFT in Bellevue. Now I walk to work :)
Walking to work was the bliss! i Will miss this
Look into Fremont. Much cheaper than slu and Belltown and not far
how long the commute from fremont to pine? maps doesnt show reliable commute options
E line, the 5 and 40. I do this everyday in 15 mins
if you are a married couple with no kids, DT Seattle is the best option. btw, there were 2 shooting incidents in Kirkland (arguably the quietest neighborhood) in the past few days. i work next to where the DT Seattle shooting happened. that 1 block stretch is usually where you see homeless people roaming around but they don't bug you and it's a busy street to feel unsafe. i walk that stretch daily.
When I moved to Seattle I didn't have kids and I like lower queen Anne are, everything is close the only drawback is homeless near Mercer and Queen Anne Ave n
Slu, Queen Anne, lower Queen Anne, north belltown, Fremont are all good options with so much walkable you won't get bored. I live in Cirrus and find it a great location. Towers in between Denny trangle and cap Hill are all walkable to Amazon, have 360 mountain and water views and great amenities.

I'm in Bellevue and it's nice and safe but expensive and boring as hell. Don't know much about Seattle proper.
Do you commute to Seattle? How long does it take you?
Not commuting, got a place in Bellevue
