Which is better in terms of career growth , tech scene and future prospects? and Why If you would have a choice to choose between one lets say an offer then which would you choose and why? assume you are somewhere between an entry level and mid level swe #engineering #software #swe
Dallas for quality/cost of live, plus people way more down to earth
Dude, Dallas is hotter than an oven. You will be stuck at home most of the time
would you rather it be a little hot in the summer or get mugged in the filthy subway and not be allowed to defend yourself, pick your poison I guess
NYC for all the reasons you mentioned And in general much more things to do in nyc & can have great quality of life depending on your comp
whats like a good base for NYC? a range would be helpful
Depends if you’ll be splitting expenses with anyone But assuming you don’t have a SO/roommate, I’d say at $150k+ you can live pretty comfortably - when I initially moved here my TC was $120k & I didn’t feel limited but I wasn’t saving anything. I was able to get an offer for $350k+ within a year of being here & kept my expenses around the same as when I was at 120. Mentioning that to speak to the “career growth/future prospects” point
Go to NYC please yall stop coming to Dallas 😭

Except for weather and cost of living, NYC is better in every other way
So two major major aspects of quality of life? Definitely Dallas
Quality of life is different for everyone. Lot of people don’t mind about weather in NYC compared to summer in Dallas. NYC has better career opportunities. Dallas might run out dry if all the companies get rid of remote.
Entry level, I’d say NYC coz assuming you might be young. Connect with people, which is way easier to do at this point in time. Mid level, and more, you can choose Dallas or Austin coz of the PPP (Purchase Power Parity) between these 2 states. Say buying home. Lots of consulting companies are available. Choice is yours still.
NYC for TC, job opportunities, networking, tech scene Dallas for happiness
Start your career with a big city like SF or NY city and than eventually move to Dallas / Austin area
This ^^
DFW is the 4th largest metro in the U.S., so it's not a small city. It's bigger than SF is.
Fellow ex-Walmart! I relocated to Dallas 10 years ago from Denver. While the summers are oppressively hot and there are not great outdoor options, it’s been a smart move for my career — I’ve earned my masters and make more than 4x my salary in CO. There are many active professional organizations for networking and so many large companies have a presence here that there are lots of options for work. Cost of living is low considering it’s a major city with a neighborhood for really any vibe you could ask for. I bought my first home in 2020 and targeting a 2nd income property currently — I have a few contacts who relocated from NYC and based on their experiences I don’t think that I could have achieved the same in NYC. Just my $0.02, best wishes!
What are those professional networking orgs?
I had to make this decision 4 months ago! I am happy I moved to Dallas and bought a house worth more than half a million dollar home with pool 🏊♀️ 🏠 😂😂 I love it 🙏
