Hello everyone, I’m currently a manager in an org at AWS. As of recent my team is not performing to the standard set by management and rather than go through a standard PIP process, leadership and I are looking at ways to improve productivity on the team. Please let me know your thoughts below 1) Implement a voting system of who was the least effective on the team during the current week. Person with the most votes get an extra week of on call along with double the sprint work for the following two weeks. Person with the least votes will be given a Starbucks gift card or some way to compensate 2) Increase workload on sprints for all developers by 1.5x. Any tickets that haven’t been finished will be counted, reported to upper management and workload will be increased beyond 1.5x the following sprint to encourage productivity 3) Implement on call for the entire team 24/7 instead of a standard rotation to improve productivity We’ve agreed that these policies will benefit the developers on the team and put them in a position for strong growth in AWS. Please give your thoughts on which one of these would be best #developers #tech
This is wild, I’d pick number 1 but thank god I don’t work in AWS
Is there any wonder Blind twitter account make fun of Amazon all the time?
I really like option 1 personally, I think 2 or 3 aren’t really realistic for incentivizing productive behavior.
Option 1 turns your team into the hunger games. I'd rather be PiPed than work in that env.
I agree with fb.
It is as real as anti vaxxer.
Have you thought about only positive reinforcement? Of the options you provided, only # 2 sounds practical. But is bound to affect the team morale nonetheless. I don’t have any specific suggestions, but what about not treating your engineers like punishable kids and instead, offer positive reinforcement (either compensation or recognition for the top performers) and see if that helps? Is that so hard to do or are you and your “upper” management du*bfooks. Gosh Amazon sounds such a scatty place to work 🤨
managing by fear is the bezos way
Thank you I will bring this up in the next management meeting
@op have you discussed with your team these options?
srsly ? Geez. Nw co. is rated 3.2 here.
Hmmmmm. Have u considered simply implementing team voting pips?
^^^ democracy is the best way to lead
All of the methods you stated will decrease productivity
Research shows that these 3 options are the most effective. Please contribute something meaningful next time
Which research? Can you please post a peer reviewed journal that backs your claim?
