I don't get this. I get it if you're not currently working, but all a competing offer is, is a way of convincingly saying "I won't accept unless you raise the price". Why isn't earning more in your current position equivalently convincing?
I don't get it either, but it's probably to account for possible title/comp inflation at the current company
