NetSuite / Oracle Senior Sales Consultant - Switch to Sales (Account Exec or Account Manager)

I am a IC3 Senior Sales Consultant with NetSuite/Oracle in the Bay Area. Total Comp ~200k (130k base, 30k commission, ~30k overtime, 30k RSUs vested over 4 years) I always hear sales makes more money, but realistically how likely is it to make over 200k in total comp as an account executive (new business) or an account manager (selling into existing client base) at Netsuite. I have heard OTE is around 225kish. Am I better off staying as an SC working my way to management from a compensation perspective if I am "guaranteed" 200k as an SC currently. When as an AE or an AM i will only make over 200k if I am OTE? What is realistic OTE for an AE or AM in the software vertical in the Bay Area at NetSuite?

Stay where you are.

Why do you say that

Having done both, I can say that money is a lousy reason to pursue a quota-carrying role. You should only pursue if you really think you can run a deal cycle better than your reps. On the comp front, you should probably consider your OTE without the RSOs because those were likely a one-time grant. So a IC3 makes OTE of $190 or so. IC4 will see another 5k bonus and maybe a little bump in salary (but your salary is high for IC3). IC5 is another 5k and a bump in salary, and you're at ~$225K OTE. Now take the flip side. Base drops significantly and no OT, but you're the master of.your own domain. You could make $225, even more, but you could also make a lot less. So do you wait a few years for a more stable shot at your desired earnings, or do you take a risk? That's why it should really come down to what makes you happy.

Excellent feedback! Thanks! I really do think I could handle the deal cycle better than most sales reps (especially the ones I have worked with). From a career growth perspective, if you are great in sales, you can sell for any industry / company. Being a seasoned SC or growing my career as an SC would limit my career to being a SC for a large software organization. Not necessarily a bad thing, but I have never heard of executive SCs.... only executive sales level individuals. Being a "great" sales performer seems to give you more klout from a career growth perspective. 100% agree with the "unknown" and uncertainty of income while in sales.

I'm an enterprise AE for a SaaS company and make close to my $225k OTE. If I could make a guaranteed $200k without any risk or stress of a quota, I'd take it in a heartbeat. I am curious about your overtime pay though... Are you paid hourly? And working significant overtime? That might impact my decision, but I have a family with young kids so your situation may be different.

Oracle WpNC83 OP Aug 20, 2017

I am paid hourly. However I am "salaried". For instance, if I don't work overtime I do not need to submit a time card. When oracle acquired netsuite we got docked in our commission pay by about 20k. The assumption was we would charge about 4 hours of OT a week. However, the OT laws in California are incredibly lenient and management does not track OT much so I average about 7 hours of OT a week. If i happen to be traveling for work I can clock anywhere up to 20 or 25 hours of OT some of it being double time

Hi! What is a Senior Sales Consultant in the Oracle process? Is that the equivalent of a presales Solution Consultant? If not, how do those roles fit into the sales cycle?

Oracle WpNC83 OP Dec 18, 2017

Yes it is the equivalent to a presales consultant
