Hi Blind community, can anyone help me deciding the offer?? I have 2 offers so far: GM - 7B, Brownstown, MI Base: $108,000 Target bonus: 13% 401k: 4% non contributory match + 4% matching = 8% PTO:15days Work schedule: 4days 10hr Boeing - L3, Renton, WA Base: $120,000 Sign on bonus: $10,000 Yearly Bonus: Based on company performance 401K: 3% non contributory match + 75% of the first 8% = 9.5% PTO: 10days Work schedule: 5days 8hr Relocation 100% I'm currently living in Detroit downtown so I'm familiar with Brownstown but I haven't been to Seattle yet. I heard cost of living in Seattle is much higher than MI.. so I feel like GM is better choice in terms of money. But I also wanna get out of MI as well.. I'm married and doesn't have a kid yet. What would be the better choice?? Will Boeing be the better offer in terms of career?? #auto #aviation #offer
I think that the opportunity at Boeing is much better. They service the private sector as well as have government contracts. Boeing also has never been bailed out by the fed as opposed to GM.
Thanks for your opinion!
If it’s your dream to work at Boeing .. then go for it . I used to work at Boeing Seattle eons ago, and the culture over there can get sour after a while … but then I guess it’s the same everywhere after a while 😄… Boeing defense is on a roll with a lot of government work , but Boeing commercial is meh .. ok.. Renton is a little on the expensive side, but with your comp they’re offering .. you can get by .. another blessing is WA has no state tax 🎉
Thanks for the info! I'll be working on the commercial side as I'm not a US citizen yet.
OP what’s your YoE?
I have 5yrs of experience in the automotive and just more than 2yrs of experience in the non-US military.
I think it’s fair for 5 years experience, you might be able to get a little more though. I just accepted an offer at 7B with 7 YOE at $125K base, 4 weeks of vacation and $10K sign on.
Work/life balance wise, IMO Boeing is much better than GM. Also, Boeing pays overtime while GM does not. I believe Boeing pays normal hourly rate plus $6.50 for OT. Boeing’s 401k match vests immediately whereas GM’s matching/automatic contribution have a 3 year vesting period. Majority of Boeing engineering positions in WA are union jobs. This comes with benefits but some people dislike unions so it may be a deal breaker for you. Does your spouse work? Assuming you are a single income family, 120k will be enough but don’t expect to be super comfortable and savings lots of money every month although this depends on lifestyle. Seattle rent is crazy expensive however Renton is cheaper. Overall WA is more expensive than MI for sure. In terms of career, it’s good to have experience in more than one industry. You can always go to Boeing for a couple of years and return to automotive later and command a higher compensation. Note: I worked for Boeing before joining GM.
Thanks for telling me your opinion! My spouse is not working yet as she just got her green card but she will definitely try to get a job. Her English is not so good and doesn't have a degree in the States so I don't expect her to get good salary though.
I see, 120k is enough for both of you guys but it may be tight depending on lifestyle. Also Seattle and surrounding cities are much more culturally diverse compared to MI. There is a huge Asian and Indian community due to tech companies bringing them in. There is also a considerable Hispanic population since they also work in tech and in agricultural jobs in Eastern Washington. It’s a tough choice man but either company looks good on your resume.
Don’t forget 3 years worth of SLA (cost of living adjustment) you’ll get with your relocation package. Make sure you find out what the breakout of your SLA payout will be. Might make the choice of moving to Puget Sound area a little more palatable.
Could you expand on that a little bit? I don’t recall any extra cost of living benefits that came with relocation when I moved with Boeing. Are you referring to the lump sum you get with relo?
When you move from a low cost of living area to a significantly higher cost of living area part of your relo package is Salary Location Adjustment. If you moved from a comparable cost of living location or slightly lower they won’t pay out the benefit; there is a minimum threshold. It’s basically an extra check every month for 3 years to help with change in cost of living. It’s tiered and decreases in amount annually but it’s a nice perk.
Better to take the GM offer ( especially when it’s close to home).. if you’re TC was much higher .. say Boeing was planning to give you ~$250k, then moving to seattle would be ok. Seattle is a pretty expensive place. ..
Yes it would be really easy to choose if Boeing can give me that much lol. I know it would be beneficial to take GM in terms of money... but Boeing was my dream company when I was a kid. Would it be really hard to live in Seattle area with 120k base salary..?
