Offer Negotiation

During intial recruiter interview I was asked for expected range and gave 120K - 130K range (I think giving a range was a mistake). After onsite last week, they came back with an offer for 130K base (Austin) with No signing bonus and no relocation (was told about no relocation during recruiter interview ). question - how can I ask for more base (~140K) and some signing bonus (~15K) without sounding greedy ? current location - Houston, 6 YOE current TC - 100K Position - Produt Manager, Hardware (no name company)

It's going to be hard to ask for more money than the top end of the range you initially pitched. They gave you your top-end price. Unless you can somehow spin it that the job is somehow different than what you thought when you initially gave your range (more direct reports, larger scope, worse work-life conditions, etc) then you're fairly stuck. You made an offer and they accepted. In good-faith negotiations that's the end of the discussion.

Agreed. That is why I am hesitant to ask for more. But I think I should definitely ask for some signing bonus.

You can spin it as " oh my expectation of 130k was just base and not TC. And it was based on an assumption that you would be receiving sign on and RSUs" Dont try to change th 130k number . You'll come out looking like someone who is just trying to fish around. Make it clear that you are happy with the base, thank them and ask them about negotiating on RSUs and sign on

I do not think this company gives any RSUs but I agree that I can spin it around for some signing bonus. Thank you

Just tell them you were expecting sign on bonus and your expectation of tv was different

You've kind of fucked up. Best option is to go get actual counter offers where you don't give a range that causes a low ball.

Rookie mistake. This will be my second job if I accept. Unfortunately no competing offers. Lesson learned about not giving any range

Good mindset OP. Learn from it and move forward.

You can always ask. Do they have bands? Are you at the top end of the range? If salary is harder to negotiate ask for a bigger sign on bonus. Ask around what the salary ranges for the company are on blind or elsewhere. Also it’s not greedy. Yeah it kinda feels bad to ask for money, but you’d rather be overpaid and then level off then underpaid and asking for pay increases imho.

Its a small company. Not enough information on Glassdoor or Blind about salary and bands. However some data about similar roles for the company in Glassdoor indicates 130K is a good offer. Only reason I think I deserve more is I am very hard working. Thank you

If you gave a range, and they gave you the absolute top of that range, why not just accept the offer? Obviously they want you for the position. Trying to ask for more than you initially wanted just because of how easy it was IS being greedy. The one thing I will say is that Austin has significantly higher COL than Houston. So if I was going to ask for more in this situation, I'd explain that my range was really anchored on Houston, and after looking into Austin more I've realized it's not enough. That might be a valid approach.
