Oracle OCI vs eBay work culture

I have been with eBay quite a while and recently got offer (SWE role / IC4) from Oracle OCI Below things I like about eBay: - eBay work culture is not very fast. - People are largely nice and helpful. - Work pressure is not high. - Not a lot of production support / ops work / late nights / weekend work - Big teams so there are people to help. Things I don't like about eBay: - Old tech stack - Mostly business related work (no technical learning) - Both base pay and stock pay is less I am a person who prefers work life balance but also money. I am getting a pay bump of ~75k and puts me a sweet spot of 300+ TC. Should I take OCI or not? Edit: Also comment to share your thoughts. #oracle #oci #engineering #tech

Worked at both the places. OCI is not the place you want to be at.

I think you should decide which is more important to you: technical learning and money, or work life balance

I like your comment. I too think about that. Thing is, although I prefer work life balance over money but at the same time, I feel I will get outdated in technical work with time and might never be able to work in better tech companies with higher pays.

I definitely understand that, perhaps you could make a switch inside eBay to something with a newer/more interesting tech stack? I know it’s a pain in the ass to go through interview loops, but given that you already have a job OCI isn’t necessarily your only option. You could pass on them and apply to other companies to find something that might strike a better balance. Work load of cloud service teams seem very hit or miss to me. Somewhat comes down to your risk tolerance for being overworked and wanting to job hop again.

OCI has been a positive experience for me. Much better than Amazon

Stripe dNPy52 Jan 26, 2023

OCI pay is competitive with Stripe and there’s less red tape around doing things. Building a cloud is more interesting than skimming off transaction fees. Considering going there.

Stripe is paper money.

Stripe dNPy52 Jan 28, 2023

Yes, while ORCL is some of the most stable tech stock there is. Say hi to Clay for me!

Man oci is a shit show, your mental health and wlb will deteriorate. Remember this comment

Myth: Oracle has work life balance. Truth: myth is completely wrong. Initial days Amazon culture is prevailing. I still think you should join OCI because these are your prime years. After 15yrs of experience you would not be able to jump like monkey. All the best

Oracle time4chan Jan 27, 2023

OCI is doing great, ignore all the negative comments. There is only negative OCI folks on blind. Move on with the offer
