Not US, comp would be considered peanuts by US people(and would make me massively doxxable). Dont know Microsoft team yet, Pinterest team seems interesting. Looking for growth (both actual and perceived) and learning opportunities. Interested in getting more into c++ in the future. US Visa sponsorship is also important.
What is not US?
I would highly recommend pin over ms. The pay difference is huge in the US, though not sure about in other countries.
If comp wasn't a factor, would you still recommend pin?
Definitely. I’ve been at big tech and the amount of in house tooling makes it so that there can be some gaps in your learning. Pinterest is a sweet spot size so that you have plenty of benefits and culture of a big tech co but still using industry standard tools. Also, social media like Pinterest, meta, tiktok is a really exciting industry to work as an engineer. There’s an insane amount of real time engagement data and you’re operating at a huge scale. Microsoft is a great company but I really wouldn’t put it in the same class as Uber, faang, etc.
Microsoft has some great C++ based applications (Teams infra, Azure) and you will learn a lot working on them. In terms of pay, Pinterest will be better. I would go for Microsoft for growth and learning and then you can jump later. The delta between both companies as a junior is smaller than when you’re mid level - senior
si came from other FAANGS. I picked Pins over MS. MS TC is way too low for me. And coming from other big companies, coming to pinterest has been a huge learning opportunity. Huge companies have infra and tooling already figured out out for the most part. At pins, because it’s much smaller and leaner company, i have had to learn a ton about many technologies that i wouldn’t have touched at the larger companies. However, MS is still a great choice if you want to go to something more stable and figured out. I disagree with the take that you will learn more there, but you will definitely still learn a lot! I would say it will make you appreciate their tooling and infra if u move to a smaller company lol
Interesting. Comps should be similar. Heard people saying the opposite about infra. Using industry standard tools instead of internals seems like a positive. Pins seems like very interesting a very interesting place ngl.
Microsoft is GREAT for immigration sponsorship, imo. Go with MSFT, get your green card, then start looking elsewhere if you don’t like it.
Microsoft has more opportunities and strong engineering culture. Learn from here and then switch after a few years
More opportunities as in more teams, or as in more learning?
MSFT has much more going on re:innovation and is growing faster. Plus bigger giving more opportunities to move to the US. Pinterest is just an ad/marketplace platform that has a small share as an also ran in those markets
Do you think all the orgs are good for learning, or some are better than others? (Ex: azure)
