Product Manager at Google
Jeez. I have been trying hard to get in Product Manager roles at Google. But with no luck even getting a reply from recruiter. One executive at Google even told me going from SW engineering to Product Manager is a hard path. Is that true? Being a SW Engineer, Is it hard for me to get in Product Management? Thoughts? Any advice on how Can I get in Product Management at Google?
Should be a slam dunk. Eng should have desirable + complimentary skill sets to PM role.
At least at Apple and Microsoft based on my experience, they prefer engineers turning in to PM. because they have the technical understanding of the product
PM in google is not a great role from what I hear. The engineers are the shot callers and that by design is the wrong way to run a business. Pick amazon or microsoft if you want influence But to answer your main question, engineering is clearly the right background for a PM in the tech industry
Doesn't microsoft have waaay too may PMs? One of friend's team had the ratio of engineers to PMs= 1:1
Yea some teams do. The trick to finding the right role in MS for a PM is to see if the job is project or product management. In MS both are called program manager
I have seen Engineering manager to PM 1:1. But not engineering to PM as 1:1. That would be too much
At Google I think the ratio is about 8:1 SWE:PM. So naturally PM aspirants have fewer opportunities than for SWE. I fucked up an onsite a few years back and haven't got a call back from a recruiter since so I must have really fucked it up LOL. Also, they have a deep pipeline of candidates who are willing to do anything for the job. And also your resume was trashed if you are a white or Asian guy according to the Youtube suer (not shooter as the case today).
Just change your LinkedIn profile to a Product Manager at Apple and wait.
Its easier to move to pm in your current company and then move to desired company as pm. However you need patience and some groundwork to position your skills for pm role.
I think the assumption on Blind is that being technical is the holy grail of PMs. That’s wholly inaccurate. Work on your non-technical skills - your ability to market size, to break down user funnels, to assess impact, and to generally understand how to create and manage a proper roadmap.
I dont think at this day and age, we have engineers solely focusing on lines of code. Most of the engineers do PM work anyway on daily basis. The question is not only about engineers not having PM skills but also having PMs not having any technical skills at all.

Yes, it is difficult being a SW Engineer. How do you expect others to see you as a PM when that isn't how you describe yourself?
