Qualcomm job levels

Hi, Previously (Late 2022) I was interviewed for Principal engineer and the recruitment was paused due to the hiring freeze in Qualcomm. At that time , the Hiring manager told me I was the top candidate.  Now, I got a call for senior staff engineer . Do you think it is good to inform the HR about my expectations at the beginning for principal engineer  or  it is not possible to change the level once the position is announced ? TC: 300K Ph. D +18 years of relevant experience # Qualcomm #

Level can be changed. Just tell recruiter from the start that you are looking for principal eng. Role

If so, you at least can avoid wasting your time for something that isn't possible

Have a call with hiring manager. Many times you get hired for a level below due to budget restrictions or cap on highest level they can hire for. If the hiring manager says that he has approval from VP to get you to next level on next review cycle then you may want to consider it. Again it will all be verbal, you will need to be aware that things may take unexpected turn in this economy. So it’s a risk you should be willing to take. It’s possible the promotion budget may shrink down significantly or whatever. I have seen on many occasions, external hires get promoted within a year. I am guessing it’s owing to the fact that at the time of hiring they don’t have approval to hire above certain level.

Thanks for the comment - pretty helpful! I was always thinking that if something is hard to get at hiring it’s way harder to get when you are already hired. BTW - in this case - hired at lower level and indeed promoted shortly - what happens with the initial stock grant (assuming RSUs are significant part of the TC) ? Do you get on promo some additional big chunk to “adjust” lower level grant at hiring?

Don’t trust any verbal agreements for a promo at some later date. It doesn’t happen in a majority of cases.
