RTO Is about the Catastrophic Failure of Leadership and the Corporate Embrace of Misogyny

Thanks to James Clarke for saying the quiet part out loud. Women who are primary caregivers to children can succeed remotely, but not in the office. Further, there are employees who had “not opened their computers for a period of 30 days.” Were there no managers to notice this? No lack of progress on a sprint board? No angry stakeholders waiting for their features? RTO is being pursued to diminish the role and power of women (and other marginalized groups) in the workplace and keep them at home in the kitchen and to bolster the power of weak, ineffective managers who don’t know how to inspire, lead and motivate their teams. RTO is about snuffing potential and elevating incompetence. Remote work was an equalizer. It gave everyone a chance form an equal footing. RTO is about bringing back the good old days. I think we all understand what those days look like. https://www.cnn.com/2023/04/20/business/ceo-questions-parenting-vs-work/index.html

This jerk was speaking from his religious background which prioritizes women staying home and raising lots of kids. Having said that, I agree with you that RTO penalizes the least powerful workers, and that these dinosaur companies are flailing against the inevitable.

If people aren’t working from home just go through formal procedures to fire them. Pretty sure there are people not working at the office too.

There's plenty who don't work at the office. The chatters, the gossipers, etc.

IMO it’s even easier to not do real work if you are an office goer. Butt-in-seat already makes you look like you’re doing half the work.

I'm not an RTO person, I myself favor wfh but this is daydreaming. They won't change a complete corporate culture just to be discriminatory towards a specific section. There's a lot in play here, many business has heavily invested in high cost area, if people just packup and start moving out all of them will be in loss. I'm pretty much sure the business/real estate is owned by the lobbyists are pressuring throught govt to open up. It's sad , people who can really work remote should be given remote as it's good for both environment and companies , saving real estate cost

As a man who bears the brunt of weekday childcare.... claims like this are annoying. Men and women are free to choose the roles and sacrifices they make in their lives and relationships.

It's the same for my family

Our society is sick with people who think that shilling for corporate america is more important than making sure we *all* take great care of our children. Need to stop idolizing jobs and instead encourage both men and women to value their home lives (and that means WFH is a good thing, for everyone)

Smart companies were doing WFH even before the pandemic….

I want to make sure I understand. Are we thinking employees should be allowed to have young children at home with them all day while they balance working and taking care of the children? I have 2 grown kids and dont think I would have been able to do this without childcare.

Stripe blindergta Apr 21, 2023

I don’t think it’s sustainable to work and do childcare at the same time. But it does make coordination way easier like picking up and dropping off kids. Being home for breakfast and dinner. Or more flexible childcare like just hiring a babysitter for part of the day and work half your day with the babysitter and half the day when the kids are asleep or being watched by a partner.

If they are able to be successful at their job, yes

I am a woman and this theory is a stretch. Offering WFH options, however, is a great way to attract talent.

“not opened their computers for a period of 30 days.” So you hired employees with literally no purpose? That's on the company and their managers. Nothing to do with remote work.

Comcast chaoseng Apr 21, 2023

yep, complete management failure, same employee will probably produce nothing in office but be rewarded for commuting

As someone who plans on being a WFH dad in the near future, you can chill out on the whole "designed solely to hurt women" schpiel (+1 to everything else)
