Rate these. New grad, starting a career. Amazon role is non-tech, if that helps. GPS role would be in new/emerging tech. Trying to decide between FAANG/Consulting to begin a career. Interned @ Amazon in college. Cutthroat recruiting year for both industries, from what I’m hearing. Ya’ll have any thoughts?#
Tech at consulting companies sucks
At an earlier stage in career, consulting jobs can give you exposure to many different projects, companies, people, etc. you will learn a lot more than by staying at a company like Amazon. I can tell you from experience, Amazon is a cesspool, avoid it like plague
Idk, I've done 2 consulting jobs and all of them were a colossal waste of time. One was defense, and one was a Deloitte-like company. Defense I sat and did nothing as an sde. The other one I was an sde but the only thing I did was literally write invoices for our clients and sat in hours and hours of meetings that had nothing to do with me. Didn't write a single line of code for the 9 months I was there.
I turned down Amazon to do tech consulting at Deloitte, I work in GPS. I regret not joining Amazon, but honestly I might have regretted not joining Deloitte if I went with Amazon. The Amazon salary is higher and brand is more respected, but there are a lot of people who genuinely love Deloitte (not me lol)
I think it's totally dependent on the person in terms of genuinely liking working there. I love my job at Amazon, but according to my orgs surveys an astonishing amount of people are unhappy.
People are not unhappy with their jobs, it's the leadership and their toxic policies
You’ll learn more at Deloitte and make connections to transition to a company better than Amazon. I’ve decline offers from both orgs, Deloitte 3x. I’m not blacklisted so if you decline either know it’s not a burnt bridge.
Go with Amazon if you see yourself sticking with the SWE role as you progress in your career. It is the fastest way to gain skills imo. After AMZN working elsewhere will be much easier. Go with Deloitte if you don't see yourself being a SWE long term and have goals to instead be a manager / product person sooner rather than later. Bonus you get a better WLB ... but you have to use that free time to network and learn other things else you will not be able to make much progress thanks to the job.
I’d suggest you avoid Amazon. One thing to note is that the experience of an intern is totally different from your experience as a full time employee. As an SDM at Amazon, leadership put a lot of pressure on us to ensure that the intern experience is amazing, we weren’t allowed to drop the ball. So as an FTE, you get to be impacted by the cut throat culture and sink or swim approach. This will ruin your experience of the corporate world and make you believe you don’t belong, which can ruin your entire career if you don’t find a better company that “heals” you. Some think it’s just a little stint at Amazon but it has long term effects. I know people who joined Amazon for their first FTE roles and they question if they’re cut out for the industry. But it’s not true, they ARE cut out for the industry but you can be made to feel like you’re not because Amazon does not really prioritize people, they prioritize the work. You can take Deloitte and then go for Microsoft or Google afterwards. Those two are a lot better.
If we just talk about companies then I see in several post comparing Amazon/Meta/Google and Deloitte is no-where in the same league .. But if you are on something like Finance/audit Deloitte is good .. So Amazon is a much bigger name but what non-tech you are talking about? Do you have Visa requirements etc?
Amazon TC is not worth the mental pressure. As for $120k +
I work in a satellite office shared by Deloitte 🤣 Basically if you value wlb go with Deloitte. If you care about career growth go with amzn
Deloitte doesn’t have wlb
