Officially separated from MS in May due to layoff. Not performance related (was recently promoted and manager wasn't consulted about who would be RIFed), but nobody will know that from reading my resume. Given the current job market and a minor case of burnout, was considering taking the summer to recharge, travel, prioritize health, etc. How long is it OK to have a gap on your resume before it looks bad? Never had a gap before and am aware hiring biases exist. Not a dev (more of a mid-career strategy/partnerships/ecosystem PM type), if that helps. Perspectives of Recruiters or M1/M2s would be highly welcome. TC: 0 #layoffs #microsoft #google #meta #amazon #recruiting #recruiters #managers #unemployed #economy
You don’t need to explain during this time tbh
How long do you think that will last? I think if you make it to the interview, you'll be fine... I worry about being screened out by either recruiters or hiring managers.
Nope people don’t screen you out just because you were laid off. It’s easier to hire laid off folks within budget tbh
Not understanding this question. What does OK mean here. Do you have a job offer but are considering not taking for some reason. Or just exploring. Finally longer you are unemployed, less employable you’ll become
No offer. Wondering at what point employers start considering you less employable. Sounds like you're saying that from day 1, employers will already be less inclined.
First month, you can pretend you are still working. Next 4 months, you can claim taking a break after xx years of continuous work. After that it become harder to explain. So, if you are planning to take longer break , do something that is worth bragging. Like climbing Mount Everest basecamp, doing MBA, learning to fly airplane, some mind blowing community service. Lastly If your morale compass allows you to lie, you can even build a better story then above.
Anything <6months is fine. Anything > 6 months i'd like to hear about some cool stuff you did with that time off: travelled, explored a new hobby, side projects, etc. As long as you have a good story you're fine.
Oh yea and put that on your resume too like if you have a 1 yr gap. Just put a line with some cool shit you did so if any recruiters/HM don't assume you were just funemployed playing video games.
Good point. Will make sure to do a few things that might be worth talking about in an interview
Recruiting here. I personally don't look at the gap as long as you're a match with my position. And honestly, everyone knows the current economic environment. You can just let your recruiter know you were impacted by a layoff. That's it
Thanks! This is helpful
What lvl / how many yoe?
I have interviewed some candidates who’ve been impacted by the mess tech layoff, the gaps were between 3-6 months, but I don’t see it as an issue if they skills met the qualifications, especially there is nothing the candidate can do to avoid layoffs.

Peaceful Protest Hasn’t Worked and Has Been Met With Aggression.
I don't think anyone is going to hold a break against you with your situation. Just explain that you were laid off as part of larger org layoffs and you took some time to evaluate. Should be fine.
I think that makes sense. I do wonder at what point hiring manager / recruiters take note of a gap. I mean, it's already a bit of a flag if someone currently does not have a job, right? Not great to leave a job without having one...
Why would it be a flag? People deserve to live their life under their own terms
