L6 SDE at Amazon to L6 SWE Google. On a work visa. Already a high performer for last 3 years. I have an average wlb team, with a path to L7 promo in a couple years. Already signed offer and joining date is in December. Joining can’t be delayed further. Renege Google, because times are uncertain? Can any Google EM share if Google blacklists reneging offers? Amazon TC: 420K Google TC 590K
Even if they did, they may not in these times. It will easy to find another person.
Times aren’t exactly certain at Amzn are they?
Depends on team / product line.
Exactly. My team (AWS) is going to be very safe.
OP your username provides the answer.
😂 forgot the question mark.
Maybe your subconscious knew it wasn’t a question ;)
YOE?
Jump to Google and if they lay you off (fat severance btw), boomerang back to Amazon
Back out imo. If widespread layoffs happen, the metrics aren't going to be how good you are at your job but: 1) if you are overpaid for your role - which let's be honest most lateral hires are, and 2) how much tenure you have - which is going to be <1 year at Goog vs multiple years at Amazon. Go for that L7 promo instead. Even if you don't get it you're objectively not losing a ton and you already have ok wlb. Visa workers need to play it very safe these days esp. considering the 60 days grace bs rule.
I’m still in the same position. Leave akamai for amazon . The work is not high impact at amazon, whereas at akamai its very safe. Should I stay put ?
I guess OP did not include signon bonus in the $590K offer?
It’s not huge. 45K. The front loaded stock makes it a higher comp.
Is Dive and save still happening at Amazon ? if so try that and get the top of SDE3 band and stay put.
Not happening as far as I know, and especially harder at this time. My comp was already top of the band (tt yoy) before stock plunged.
My partner experienced layoff recently.. based on that, any amount of money is not worth to be in that position for Visa ppl.. it’s horrible.. As you mentioned, you’re on safe team.. I would highly suggest to be there and perform well and that extra amount may not make much diff to your lifestyle at that pay.. seeing the current scenario, I won’t be surprised even if Google does layoffs.. and remember the chance that you’ll be on that list is high considering the pay and no impact in the initial days.. You’ll get better opportunities like this again after couple of years once everything settles
Why would you leave a ~200k increment?
To not be jobless in 3-6 months. Ppl on visa have to think through these things
I doubt Google would do that unless you screw up big time in 6 months. If most of it is liquid money, worth the risk IMO
