Hey guys! Expecting an offer soon for a principal software engineer at the McLean, Virginia office. Originally interviewed for the Master Software Engineer position. The interviews went very well, but there were a few questions where I didn't answer sufficiently in the coding session. Recruiter said I was downgraded and asked if I'd consider the principle (Senior) swe and I said yes. Original expectations was that TC would be around 200k, but with the downgrade now I'm not sure if I should lower my expectations given my total 12 yoe. Team match call went really well and I immediately got the notice afterwards that they are very interested in having me join the team. What should I be expecting for an initial offer, and how far could I go with negotiations given my yoe? What can be negotiated at this level besides base salary? Bonus? Stocks? PTO? Others? Thanks for all the input! Edit: cleared the meta tech screen, waiting on Google tech screen result (hopefully positive but not sure) UPDATE: first offer was 160k, 20k sign on bonus Final accepted offer 175k and 40k sign on. Thanks all for your input!!! Location: McLean, VA YOE: 12 Current TC: 135k
Probably base around 160-170. Bonus is a set range and depends on performance. No RSU
Base 160k max and around 8800 bonus no stocks we have employee stock purchase plan
Thank you. Is that a hard cap or do you think they might stretch to 170 base?
170 is not even in the range for what recruiters work with, I would say ask for sign on
No stocks. Company discriminates between leaders and IC when most of the value is generated by IC
Definitely 160+ base. Not sure if the bonus is based on location as well, but it should be 6-17k. With your yoe I would try to get closer to 170k base so your TC around 180.
Thank you Lockheed! Sounds promising!
No problem, I figure if you can get 150+ in Plano, McLean should be 160+ easily.
What's the hierarchy of software engineers at Capital One? Principal sounds like pretty high in the ladder
Principal is Sr software Engineer at capital one
Senior - Principal - Master - Lead - Distinguished
Did you ask about their stack ranking policy? Oh, they probably won't, either way, good luck with that. Really, good luck and check how many people stay past 3-5 yrs on the teams. That's the question to ask on your match call. Beware of being hired as the new bottom of that stack rank.
@OP in a similar situation, did you have any leverage e.g. a competing offer or did you just request for that number or higher for them to give you that final offer?

Do people underestimate E6 role at meta?
Only base, no stocks for associate level.
I heard it's possible to get stocks at this level, did that policy recently change or is it just very rare?
Recently changed to include master, not your level.
