I had a verbal offer from Salesforce for 145k + 10% bonus annually. I told them I had wanted 160k and if possible a sign on bonus, they had me do 1 more call after I said this and then took the offer away. Is this common practice? Yoe: 6+

Israeli precision-guided munition likely killed group of children playing foosball in Gaza, weapons experts say
It's normal. Your feedback was borderline or was low in a certain area. They probed it and confirmed original suspicion.
I assumed they would just tell me no and I’d accept the original offer
If the candidate was that borderline/low then why did they make an offer in the first place. Seems odd.
Ima guy…
Lol why did you ask that?
That's the risk you took to get potentially 15k more, I'd do the same. Chin up and move on. You will get a even better offer.
Yea I didn’t see this risk lol, I assumed they would say no and I’d take the original offer
To clarify, were you negotiating total TC or just base salary? I think RSU and sign on bonus is usually much easier to negotiate than base, especially without competing offers
I don't think it's very common. However, I only negotiate when I have leverage to negotiate. Meaning, I have a better offer or my current position already is better. In that case, if they did pull the offer, then it's no big deal because they couldn't afford me.
that's a bad way to negotiate. Even if op doesn't have any other offers in hand, he can still ask for more. If the team can't afford him, then they should reject his request not rescind the offer.
Yes, I agree. Yes/No is a fools choice. Negotiation at lower level is very different than at higher level.
I’m not sure why you’re mad when they can’t match your salary expectations
I wanted the job lol it would have been good experience
Would u have taken it at original offer ? I would say reach out to the manager on LinkedIn and ask for feedback. And tell him you will work on it and try again few months later. If he's a kind guy he will share.
SF is weird! I was rejected in phone screen by HR over those old school HR questions
Lol but why?
I don't understand those interviews; so can't even tell what went well or what did not. I was caught off guard for sure.
Did they not ask what you were looking for in the beginning of the interview process? Most companies I’ve seen will snatch an offer if you are unreliable to the expectations you set for yourself. Better to state desired salary upfront and negotiate bonus and rsus at offer. Unless something really dramatic happened or the interview was dragged out over months and you learned new skills
'if you are unreliable to the expectations you set for yourself.' but what about competing offers? If you have these then the initial expectations should not matter right?
Then be prepared to go with the other offer if you bring it up.
Come to Midwest 5k will be a risk. Just move on.
Never take an additional interview after they made an offer, almost guaranteed they can spin it however is convenient for them.
How do u even say no and continue to negotiate
just say no, you already made me an offer, I am past the interview stage of my job hunt and am carefully considering all offers I have received. Your abc is on the low side of my expectations, is their a possibility to adjust the comp to be closer to xyz and could you let me know what your final offer is. I understand .. etc.
The one more call. Was it technical? Did it not go well. Oracle did this with me
Honestly I thought it went well, it had technical question and I had answers for all…it was also a repetitive call and in the end I told the guy I don’t have any question for him b.c I already asked him in a round a few weeks ago. I think maybe that was my mistake :(
Well. Salesforce did this with me. Told me they have an offer for me. Then when I told them I have a competing offer that pays 40k more in base they told me they probably can't meet that. Recruiter straight up ghosted me after that.
