Why I Find Free Palestine Inspiring
I recently got promoted to senior dev after having been with Disney for ~1.5years. I graduated right before I started here so I have no prior experience other than my own projects and internships. People will argue this but: in my opinion, and the opinions of my team members, this promotion isn’t undeserved and I’ve shown myself to be a key member of the team. I am now looking to jump ship as I’m under-stimulated by the work I do here as well as my compensation. Given that I’ve prepared for interviews sufficiently and properly, would I be able to get a lateral jump offer of senior dev at a company like Amazon in a few months when I’m at 2YOE? I don’t want to limit the conversation to just Amazon though so please share your thoughts for how I can leverage this opportunity for optimal career growth at my age. Thank you! Blind tax: $185k avg/yr over my tenure at Disney
You’d have to meet the bar for a senior SWE. It’s not impossible, but I think it’s hard to have senior skills with 2 YOE. If you’re understimulated do the jump anyway. You’re not doing yourself any favors by staying
Wheres your blind tax?!
Added!
Possible at Oracle as new grad.
Thanks! Looking to move upwards from Disney though lol
Your senior status at Disney doesn't translate to meeting the senior bar at Amazon imo
Yeah I guess this would technically be a jump up in seniority but I have friends who have gone from mid level at one company to getting a senior offer at another. Granted they have more experience than me but it’s not out of the question. If I do 10/10 on all interviews, will Amazon still limit my offer based on YOE?
I don't think a recruiter will allow you an interview loop for L6 (senior)
Even given Amzn’s bad engineering bar, the engineering of Amazon is significantly better than a place like Disney. I would try to aim for SDE2 at Amazon and learn as much as possible. You’ll be surprised by what you don’t know
Titles are only meaningful between companies with similar scope. SDE II at Amazon, despite the title ‘downgrade’, will be a huge upgrade in terms of both TC and scope compared to your current role. And honestly unless you’re an extremely exceptional candidate, senior at Amazon is not gonna happen with 2 YoE.
+1, I’ve seen so many people becoming directors of product at small companies and then not being comfortable coming as senior PM at Amazon.
By senior, do you mean SDE2 or SDE3 at Amazon. SDE2 is definitely possible and SDE3 is definitely not possible.
I mean SDE3. That’s the equivalent of the level I have at Disney rn if we go strictly off of jumps on a ladder. I got promoted to SDE2 last summer and got SDE3 a few weeks ago.
theres no way you get sde 3 at amazon. 0 chance. maybe another company.
