ServiceNow developer career? Needing advice
Hello Blind, So I just graduted from an intership from F500 company doing ServiceNow development. I have been seeing a lot of demand right now for ServiceNow developer goverment contractor jobs especially in defense and around VA region. I am wondering if taking a path in ServiceNow devlopment for government will hurt my career? I am really afraid about how my career will transition. Would it be hard for someone to transition from SNOW developer to SWE? What are some career advancements for someone in this area? I would recommend not to go that route. I am an engineer at ServiceNow and we go to lengths to make platform easy to configure that engineers like you don't have to write code but just configure, drag drop few things and you're good to go. Demand will be high, may be decent pay and is probably low bar for entry too, but will not teach you to general software skills. With that said you can use this to buy time for something better

Do you have a CS background? I feel like strong JavaScript knowledge would compliment your ServiceNow development, and you’ll definitely be able to get SWE interviews. Study data structures and algorithms! Being a good culture fit is also important to landing roles.. I’d imagine the culture isn’t all that in defense. If you must take the role, it’d be interesting to work there for a year and then apply at ServiceNow as a SWE.
I would say that this would hurt. You have to look for companies with good engineering culture - that's very important early on your career - FAANG + some others. Look for good team/mentor rather than TC. And try to work on some core technologies, instead of doing consulting/writing service now scripts.
