I have passed hiring committees for Shopify and Facebook. I don't have TC for either but what I know is: Shopify: PM Lead - can live anywhere (probably NY or LA, for personal preference in short term). (TC- gonna guess around $300K ish). I will get to lead PMs. FB - L5/L6 - (still discussing); will have to do team matching; I'm gonna guess TC will be at least 20-40% higher than Shopify based on levels FYI My ultimate career goal is impactful leadership opportunities, specifically the C-suite, whether someone else's company or preferably my own. FB will be more money (esp rising through levels) and maybe more prestige. But Shopify will let me lead people quickly, so my next role will be a higher level. Both companies have a ton of PMs and I think the key way I can differentiate myself in the market is through side hustles -- which means WLB. Also, I don't think MPK/Seattle/Boston will do much for my social life, unlike NY or LA. I could possibly match with a team in NY for FB, but that remains to be seen. Which one is a better fit for me and my goals? #productmanager #product #pm
fyi i think you’re overestimating shopify tc at 300 (i’m going to guess low to mid 200s for L7 PM) shopify will have more opportunities for impact, but facebook may better help land you that next role
This is pointless without the numbers. I don't know why people insist on doing posts like these before they have all the info
Especially when you know money 💰is always the driving factor haha 😆
Your ultimate goal is impactful leadership. Don’t let Blind’s TC monkeys drive your decision. You’ll know the right thing to choose from there. You’re already on the L6 border, which is probably more senior than most who would respond here. If you have the aptitude to exceed L6 in your trajectory, you should make this decision on your own or with a select mentor or two.
sounds like you're under-estimating shopify comp
Lol. There are several comments saying the exact opposite above
If more senior leadership roles are your goal, I’d take the Shopify role. Sure, you could make your way to M1 at FB eventually, but honestly, entry level management at a place like FB is less impactful than at a smaller company. You’d probably spend more of your time managing organizational thrash than leading impactful work. Don’t get me wrong, there is still impactful work, but the proportion time you spend on it is likely to be smaller, so your pace of growth will be slower.
Caveat: This very much depends on the nature of the PM lead role and the opportunities for growth.
Pysl I’ll be soon in a similar situation, as I’m expecting a FB offer for an M1 role. Is an engineering manager M1 entry level? And can you give me examples of the organizational “trash”? I expect the FB offer will be higher that the other offer I already have, but I’d likely make it to the next level in the other company faster than in FB.
Fb also has location in NY, and small team in LA
Also, one can live in SF/Oakland and commute to MPK for social life. Though that traffic is terrible.
Critical Experience > TC unless you need the TC
Could you comment on the interview process at FB vs Shopify? How long did you prep? Thanks
Same question ^
if you get L6 at fb, you can transfer to m1 pretty easily.
Is this the case for design as well?
think so yeah
