Hey folks, So I’m interviewing at Facebook for a finance role. Prior to this my initial plan was to focus on obtaining my MBA at Haas (PTMBA). I’m not a student yet, I just submitted my application for Round 1. I personally don’t think that I should because: 1) I’m not a student 2) it may be a detriment to my application because it shows that I MAY not be able to fully commit and 3) weird flex but okay My mentor argued otherwise: 1) I should be transparent with the hiring manager 2) it may actually help my candidacy; the program wouldn’t start until the summer anyways (assuming that I get in) and 3) it shows that I want to continue expanding my toolkit and that I’m able to look beyond just this job. What do you guys think? TC: 105K YOE: 4 years
Is this a part time or full time MBA? If full time, definitely don’t tell. (and, change your mentor!) If part time, maybe your mentor’s argument start making little more sense. But, it’s still too early to tell anyway. What’s the probability that you will even get in?
This is part time. But I think the other poster made a great point. I’ve been working toward my MBA for at least 3 years. This opportunity at Facebook came because it looks like my resume got passed around a bit and now is being considered (they had an old version of my resume. I applied a year ago). Probability of getting into Haas? Eh. Don’t want to assume, but I guess an okay shot? My stats are above average but I come from the defense industry and not the typical pool that Haas targets. But I think I put together a good story and communicated my want well.
PTMBA is much easier to get into than FT, BTW I think you'll have a great shot of getting in. Also, don't tell the HM, especially if you haven't even been accepted yet. You can cross that bridge when you come to it.
Don’t do it. You might lose a lot if you do. And gain almost nothing
Don’t tell you hiring manager. It will definitely have an impact about how he thinks about you and what kind of work you get. Try being in your managers shoes , if you know that your reportee is going to leave in an year, it doesn’t make sense investing much in his career, or giving him more work to develop him. I don’t see any scenario where telling your hiring manager helps you.
At Haas it’s called Ewmba, not ptmba. Also there are a lot of fb ppl in ewmba program. Shouldn’t be a problem but I wouldn’t tell them up front.
Thanks for the advice!
Time to think about changing the mentor 🤷♀️ It's clearly bad advise
Tell your manager after graduation and make it a surprise
LOL okay I legit laughed my ass off on this. Thanks for the laugh hahah

Is "From the River to the Sea" So Wrong?
you don’t know what you want
That’s fair. To expand a bit. I think my fault is that I wanted both options without jeopardizing the other and that’s just dumb. I’ll reevaluate my needs before I half ass this. Thanks.
